How to choose a tabletop RPG
First, pick your genre and tone — epic fantasy, space opera, horror, or a system without a fixed setting. Then, decide on the system: lighter rules for a quick start, or crunchier ones for tactical combat and character builds. Only then consider the format — core rulebook, starter set, expansion, or PDF/ebook.
Quick guide:
- Want a specific world and community → often D&D or another popular system in roleplaying games
- Want atmosphere without "endless leveling" → check out horror and sci-fi RPGs
- Already have the rules but need gear → accessories, dice, miniatures
Who is this section for?
- New Party — one clear core rulebook/starter set, then accessories.
- Experienced Table — expansions, alternative systems, maps, and DM screens.
- Solo Player / Story Reader — gamebooks and systems suitable for solo play.
- Gift Givers — dice, miniatures, or tips in gifts for RPG players.
What you're buying: Rulebooks vs. Gear
| Need | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rules and systems | Roleplaying games | The foundation of the table — nothing else makes sense without it |
| D&D ecosystem | Dungeons & Dragons | Rulebooks, adventures, and compatible gear all in one place |
| Maps, screens, tools | RPG accessories | Speeds up prep and improves table readability |
| Miniatures | RPG miniatures | Characters and monsters for your battle map |
| Rolls | Gaming dice | Sets and individual dice for various systems |
The imago experience
RPGs are a long-term focus for imago, both in our range and our community. Our own publishing line Mytago / Mytago RPG brings you Czech titles and translations — not just imported English books. On our blog, we tackle practical table questions (systems, starting out, free games) rather than marketing fluff.
FAQ
What is an RPG / roleplaying game?
Tabletop RPGs are collaborative storytelling games: players control characters, and one person usually facilitates the world (the Game Master / GM). Rules and dice resolve uncertainty — the rest is up to the discussion at the table.
How does it differ from a board game?
Board games have a fixed goal and a game board. RPGs have an open-ended story, characters, and sessions that build upon each other.
How do I start as a complete beginner?
Pick one system, the core rules, and a small group. Tip: How to start with D&D.
Do I need miniatures?
No. Many tables play "theater of the mind." Miniatures and maps help with combat and positioning — they aren't a requirement to play.
English or Czech?
It depends on the language skills of your fellow players. Czech titles (including Mytago) make starting easier, while English originals have a wider catalog of expansions. Check the language in the product details.
Is one book enough?
For the first session, often yes (starter set / core rulebook). Buy expansions once you know what your table really enjoys playing.
