The sitcom centers on the adventures of the crew of the mining ship Red Dwarf. In the first episode, you learn how a fatal safety violation by technician Dave Lister caused the death of everyone on board. The only survivors were Dave Lister (who was in stasis as punishment at the time) and Cat, a creature that evolved from Lister's pet cat. The ship's computer, Holly, also brought back the hologram of Lister's arrogant and self-centered colleague, Arnold Judas Rimmer. Later, the loyal and scatterbrained android Kryten and Lister's former girlfriend Kristine Kochanski joined the crew.
Red Dwarf is the second longest-running sitcom in the UK. It aired from 1988 to 1999 and returned again between 2009 and 2017. The show's success is credited to writers and producers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.
One of the show's highest honors came in 1994, when the episode "Gunmen of the Apocalypse" won an international Emmy award in the popular arts category. That same year, the series was also named Best BBC Comedy Series at the British Comedy Awards.
