Chainmail armor was a vital part of a knight's gear. A chainmail shirt paired with chainmail mittens and a chainmail coif protected almost the entire body with a barrier of thousands of rings. Production was extremely costly, so only wealthy nobles or clergy could afford chainmail armor.
