We know of blowing horns from archaeological finds and engravings, with their use documented as far back as the late Bronze Age. Although metal trumpets and bugles began to appear later in the Iron Age, the use of cow horns remained more widespread.

Vikings used signal horns for communication, calling for an attack, and intimidating their enemies. These Viking trumpets are known as lur. Archaeological evidence suggests they were also used during religious ceremonies.

The technique for blowing a signal horn is similar to a trumpet—the key is the correct embouchure (blowing air through closed, vibrating lips). You can change the pitch by adjusting lip tension and breath force. Every horn has a unique sound and playing style. In short, mastering the horn takes practice.
