Which expansion books do you need
To play Dungeons & Dragons, you only need the core rulebooks: Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual. Expansion books add content and are useful depending on what your game is missing:
- More options for players: Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything add subclasses, spells, and optional rules. These are the most popular supplements after the core trio.
- More monsters for the Dungeon Master: Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes expand the bestiary with new creatures and race lore.
- Worlds and settings: Eberron, Theros, Ravenloft, Wildemount, or the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide describe specific worlds with their own races, factions, and maps.
- Adventures and campaigns: pre-written stories like Icewind Dale, Candlekeep Mysteries, or The Wild Beyond the Witchlight can be found in adventure modules.
- For younger players: the Young Adventurer's Guide series (Warriors & Weapons, Beasts & Behemoths) explains the D&D world without rules, perfect for kids and absolute beginners.
2014 and 2024 Editions
Most expansion books were created for the 2014 ruleset. They are compatible with the new 2024 core rulebooks as Wizards of the Coast maintains backward compatibility; only some subclasses and spells have updated versions in the new Player's Handbook. If you are playing with the new rules, treat older supplements as expansions, not replacements.
Covers and condition
Books marked as "alternate cover" or "limited edition" feature different cover art intended for game stores, but the content is identical. Items marked as "damaged" have cosmetic flaws and a lower price. You can find books from other publishers in 5e compatible, while accessories like DM screens and cards have their own categories.
