Shields have been part of infantry and cavalry equipment since ancient times. Types varied by purpose, weight, size, and material. Common designs included wooden shields, reinforced wood with metal bosses, metal shields, and even those made from wicker or turtle shells. Shields were also used in tactical formations, such as the Roman 'testudo' or the shield walls favored by heavy infantry in the Middle Ages. Today, Viking-style LARP shields are incredibly popular among LARPers, inspired by the ones used by the Vikings themselves.
