How to choose
Rules and setting define your start. Large battles with heaps of dice are offered by Warhammer 40,000 and the fantasy Age of Sigmar. An alternative from another popular fantasy world is Middle-earth SBG. Shorter games with fewer models are handled by skirmish games or Conquest. Sci-fi classics with mechs are represented by BattleTech.
Choose paints and equipment based on your chosen army. The Citadel paints system perfectly matches Games Workshop guides. Bottles from Army Painter or our entire modeling paint hub offer a different price-to-volume ratio. Brushes, tools, and glues are waiting in tools. For storage and transport, grab some cases and boxes.
Who is it for
Newcomers usually reach for starter sets (Combat Patrol, Vanguard). They contain a ready-made army foundation and cost less than buying piece by piece. Veterans, on the other hand, hunt for specific units directly in Warhammer 40k miniatures. Modelers who don't need to play head straight to paints and build their own worlds through dioramas and terrain.
The imago experience
We have been building the background for wargaming, RPGs, and board games for twenty years. We do LARP, sew costumes in our workshop, and play games ourselves. Where should I start with Warhammer 40k?
Starter sets or Combat Patrol boxes make the most sense for newcomers. They contain a balanced army to get you started. You will also need a base spray, a few paints, and a brush. You can find details for your first steps in our beginner's guide.
Do I have to use Citadel paints for Games Workshop miniatures?
The Citadel brand matches official guides perfectly, making it easy to stick to a specific scheme. However, you can easily paint your miniatures with your favorite colors from Army Painter or Vallejo from our modeling section.
What is skirmish wargaming?
Skirmish focuses attention on small units. You don't move entire battalions; instead, you control, for example, five specific heroes. Games are faster, rules are often snappier, and you don't need as many miniatures to start.
