StarCraft: The Miniatures Game – The RTS legend comes to life on your tabletop

Legendary StarCraft as a wargame! Command the Zerg, Terrans, or Protoss in an epic battle on your table.

StarCraft: The Miniatures Game – The RTS legend comes to life on your tabletop

If you've ever spent a night bathed in the blue glow of a monitor with the warning "Not enough minerals" ringing in your ears, listen up. The world of wargaming that defined modern strategy is back in its most tangible form yet. Forget pixels—a full-fledged wargame from Archon Studio has arrived.

Where did the StarCraft phenomenon come from?

The year was 1998, and Blizzard Entertainment unleashed a game that changed everything. StarCraft wasn't just another strategy game; it was the perfect triangle of gameplay balance.

The technologically advanced but few Protoss, the endless and adaptive Zerg swarm, and the human Terrans in between—outcasts surviving through improvisation and heavy machinery. The game became a national sport in South Korea, laid the foundations for professional e-sports, and its heroes like Jim Raynor and Sarah Kerrigan became pop culture icons. Today, this conflict moves from the screen directly to your gaming table. The 2010 sequel only confirmed the brand's success, and it remains popular to this day.

Over the years, StarCraft has tried to conquer much more than just our computer monitors. Beyond the iconic strategy games and the Nintendo 64 port, we've seen a mountain of books and comics that delved deep into the fates of the Koprulu Sector's heroes. We also can't forget the 2007 board game legend from Fantasy Flight Games, which remains a sought-after (and quite expensive) collector's item.

Archon Studio is now following up on this rich history in a truly spectacular way—after the current miniatures game, they are already planning more board games for 2027 that will draw us into the fight for vespene gas from a slightly different angle.

A new era: StarCraft in your hands

StarCraft: The Miniatures Game is an ambitious wargame that faithfully captures the dynamics of its source material. Archon Studio delivers detailed models you'll recognize at first glance—from rank-and-file Marines to massive Ultralisks. Plus, the models are molded in their faction colors, so they look great right out of the box, which is awesome news if you're short on time for painting.

How does it actually play?

The game rules are designed to simulate the build order you know from the PC version:

  • Resources and Upgrades: When building your army, you don't just deal with points, but also Minerals and Vespene Gas. You use gas to buy tactical cards representing buildings and tech upgrades.
  • Supply System: This is the heart of the game. You start the battle with an empty table. You summon units gradually as your supply limit increases each round.
  • Alternating Activation: Forget waiting forever for your opponent to finish their entire turn. Here, you alternate with your opponent after every single unit activation, so you're constantly in the action.

How does StarCraft stack up against the giants?

Compared to Warhammer 40,000, StarCraft is much more "fluid." In Warhammer, you usually deploy everything at the start, whereas in StarCraft, your units constantly arrive from reserves as reinforcements from your base.

If you play the popular Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings, you'll feel right at home, but StarCraft gives you more freedom. In Conquest, you have to follow waves (light, medium, heavy), while in StarCraft, it only depends on your decisions and your Supply. Have enough capacity? Send a Siege Tank in the very first round and surprise your opponent.

First impressions: What do the testers say?

Initial reviews and testing impressions are enthusiastic and agree on a few key points:

  • The feel of the game: It truly feels like StarCraft. The "direct counter" system works perfectly—if you send the right unit against its ideal target, you'll literally vaporize it thanks to the Surge dice.
  • Model quality: The final models are top-tier, detailed, and free of ugly mold lines that would annoy you during painting.
  • Pacing: Smaller 1000-point games are fast-paced brawls lasting an hour and a half, while 2000-point games offer a deep strategic experience.

Which faction will you choose?

Before you dive into buying, think about which playstyle suits you best:

  • Terrans (Humans): Do you like lead, heavy machinery, and tactical flexibility? Terrans are all about proper positioning. They have great range and can keep units alive for a long time thanks to Medevacs. Ideal for those who want to blast the opponent before they can get close.
  • Zerg (The Swarm): Do you love aggression and the feeling of an endless wave crashing over the enemy? The Zerg will thrill you. They are fast, deadly in melee, and their strength lies in numbers. You don't worry about losses; you just smother the opponent with a mass of bodies and sharp claws.
  • Protoss (Advanced Race): Looking for quality over quantity and technological superiority? Protoss is your choice. You'll have fewer models on the table, but each one is a small army. Energy shields and psionic storms allow you to dominate the battlefield with incredible elegance.

How to get started?

Entering the world of StarCraft is very simple thanks to the ready-made sets. On imago, you'll find everything you need for your first battle:

  • Faction Starters: Your building block for Terrans, Zerg, or Protoss. They contain iconic units, stat cards, and everything needed to deploy.
  • Two-Player Starter Boxes: The ideal choice if you want to start right away with a friend. Includes two opposing factions, rules, and tokens.
  • Terrain Set: Thematic mineral deposits and vespene geysers that serve as key strategic points on the map.
  • Unit Expansions: Once you get the hang of it, expand your army with heavy machinery and advanced tech like Siege Tanks or powerful Templars.

The Koprulu Sector opens soon. StarCraft: The Miniatures Game will be in stock at imago in mid-April. Get ready, your battle for the survival of the galaxy is just beginning!
