Free Tabletop RPGs: 6 Role-Playing Games Without the Investment
Looking for free tabletop RPGs? We'll give you tips on 6 Czech role-playing games that you can download for free and play without needing expensive accessories or rulebooks.
What do you find in the article?
There are many ways to approach playing role-playing games. Some people love beautiful rulebooks, original GM screens, detailed miniatures, and multiple sets of dice color-coded to their mood and the season. Others are perfectly happy with a few printed pages, a pencil, and a die from a board game.
If you belong to the second group and don't care for fancy accessories, this article is for you. Beyond established brands and professionally crafted oddities, you'll find a range of great worlds and systems created by enthusiastic individuals or small teams who offer their work for free. Over the years, we've collected quite a few, and here is an overview.
Factum
Factum is an original Czech minimalist, universal, story-driven system. Its history dates back to 2006, when it aimed to expand the local RPG scene. Factum is a universal system of purely Czech origin (currently in beta), designed for combat-heavy stories in any genre. Innovative character creation based on a questionnaire and point-buy skills complements classic mechanics based on success rates and dice pools. Naturally, the game supports campaigns and character progression.

Čas pro hrdiny
Čas pro hrdiny (Time for Heroes) is a classic RPG with unconventional elements, available as a PDF. The system focuses on individual characters and their abilities. Testing—or rolling for success—is based on a simple conversion of verbal descriptions into numerical mechanics and back, which provides great freedom in evaluating various situations. The rules are modifiable according to the players' ideas and needs, and the game itself shows you where, what, and how much is worth changing. Two ways of evaluating actions, one classic dice-based and the other estimation-based, allow you to focus either on the details of each maneuver or on the character's overall intentions.

The game is classic in the sense that it involves playing one character with defined abilities and achieving game goals through that character. The setting and style are optional, and the character creation rules are universal and designed for group customization. They are written for longer games (ten or more sessions) with suggestions for simplification for shorter ones.

Grimoár
Grimoár (Grimoire) is a Czech fantasy RPG focused on minimalism, inspired by Old-School Renaissance (OSR) games and the Powered by the Apocalypse narrative systems. Its main strengths are simple rules, fast resolution, and a focus on fiction. It is an ideal choice for fast-paced adventures, dungeon crawling, and action scenarios. The entire game fits on 15 pages.

Characters have no classic stats, classes, or attributes; everything is handled by a single die roll. Players choose specific abilities that improve their actions or provide specific benefits, such as access to magic or alchemy. The magic system is based on grimoires—a wizard can only cast as many spells per day as they physically have in their grimoire.
Časy se mění
Časy se mění (Times Are Changing) is a super-simple RPG set in an absurd Soviet environment with a time-travel theme. Players take on the roles of fearless comrades who return to the past to fix damage caused by Western saboteurs. The game serves as an introduction to RPGs, guiding players from the absolute basics to creating their own plots, and offers simple yet clever mechanics like stopping time, creating time loops, and transferring items across time.

The game is ideal for one-shots or short sessions, but it is not very suitable for long-term play due to its narrow focus and potential monotony of mechanics during frequent play. The advantage is a quick start thanks to character creation during play and a fixed time limit, which adds tension but can also cause complications. Overall, the game is recommended as a fun, relaxing one-shot that is worth trying.

Moloth
Moloth is an RPG designed for solo play, belonging to the genre of journaling RPGs focused on creative storytelling. The game world is situated on the back of a creature so huge that it contains mountains, lakes, and towns. The game was inspired by the title Colostle and attempts to capture the aesthetic of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, offering a contrast between a pleasant environment and harsh reality, cheerful creatures, and terrifying monsters.

The player takes on the role of a character living on Moloth and tries to achieve their goal while traveling across the landscape, meeting people and creatures, finding and losing items, and building a reputation. The game uses mechanics based on drawing cards from a standard deck divided into two parts. There are four playable classes: Breeder, Cartographer, Guardian, and Rider. The game rules are approximately 40 pages long.
Svět Dračáku
Svět Dračáku (World of Dračák) is a Czech RPG that offers players a chance to reminisce or experience for the first time what it was like to play the legendary "Dračí doupě"—the first Czech RPG of its kind. Players can take on the roles of mythical heroes in a fantastic world where they fight dragons, undead, warlocks, dark knights, basilisks, and medusas. All this with a touch of irony and a simple, modern game system that requires only a few friends, two six-sided dice, a pencil, paper, and these rules.

The game is built on the Powered by the Apocalypse system by Vincent Baker and is available in a beta version that still needs tuning and further explanation. Svět Dračáku can be approached either as a regular RPG or as a nostalgic memory of playing "Dračí doupě." Although the rules contain many references to the original game and try to evoke nostalgia and a smile on the faces of veterans, they are designed to be usable even for new players looking for a fun story in a fantasy world. The game does not aim to be a successor to the original Dračí doupě, but serves as a tribute to this legendary game.
