Volo's Guide to Monsters is a bestiary divided into three parts that significantly expands upon the original Monster Manual.
The first part covers groups of monsters—gnolls, hags, kobolds, mind flayers, giants, orcs, goblins, yuan-ti, and beholders—with several pages of descriptive text for each. The second part introduces new playable races: aasimar, firbolg, bugbear, goblin, goliath, lizardfolk, kenku, kobold, hobgoblin, orc, tabaxi, triton, and yuan-ti pureblood. The third part contains monster statistics with brief descriptions for over a hundred creatures.
Finally, there are three appendices. Appendix A features several new beasts, Appendix B provides a host of new NPCs, generally at higher levels than those in the original Monster Manual, and Appendix C includes monster tables by environment. Overall, it's a fantastic book that nicely expands on the original Monster Manual.
Personally, I have the limited edition, which features a black, suede-like cover with an image of a Mind Flayer. It looks truly luxurious. Otherwise, the standard and limited editions are identical.

V první jsou skupiny nestvůr, gnolové, ježibaby, koboldi, mozkožrouti, obři, orkové, skřeti, yuan-ti a zřící, přičemž ke každé skupině je několik stran popisných textů. V druhé části jsou nové hratelné rasy - ásimar, firbolg, gobr, goblin, goliáš, ještěrec, kenku, kobold, skurut, ork, tabaxa, triton a čistokrevný yuan-ti. Ve třetí části jsou pak statistiky nestvůr s krátkým popisem, kterých je tu víc než sto.
Závěrem jsou tři dodatky. V dodatku "A" je několik nových zvířat, v dodatku "B" je hromada nových cizích postav, zpravidla na vyšší úrovni než v původním Bestiáři. V dodatku "C" jsou pak tabulky s nestvůrami dle prostředí. Celkově je to velmi povedená kniha, která pěkně rozšiřuje původní Bestiář.
Osobně mám limitovanou edici, která černý, jakoby semišový obal s vyobrazením Mozkožrouta. Vypadá to vážně luxusně. Ale jinak se klasická a limitovaná edice nijak neliší.
A great addition for DMs looking to expand their monster repertoire or seeking inspiration for their next adventure through monster lore and habits. The book also includes additional player races, but otherwise, the content is exclusively for DMs.
Zaujímavý doplnok pre DM, ktorý chcú širší repertoár monštier alebo hľadajú inšpiráciu pre ich ďalšie dobrodružstvá v podobe lore o monštrách a ich zvykoch. V knihe sa nachádzajú aj dodatočné rasy pre hráčov ale inak je obsah výlučne len pre DM.
An essential guide for DnD fans. The perfect follow-up to the core rulebook trio. It includes race expansions that I personally can't imagine playing DnD without.

Volo's Guide to Monsters is a fantastic addition to the core D&D books. I mainly wanted the book for the new monsters and playable races. However, what really makes this book stand out are the detailed descriptions of the behavior of certain races like Gnolls, Goblins, Beholders, etc. In these descriptions, you'll learn how they live, what their social hierarchy is like, how they build their lairs, and more. I would just point out that these behavioral descriptions are tied to the Forgotten Realms setting, so if you primarily play in a different world (e.g., Eberron), the descriptions might not be as useful for all the races.
Volo's Guide to Monsters je skvělým doplňkem k základním knihám DnD. Knihu jsem chtěl převážně kvůli novým monstrům a hratelným rasám. Každopádně nejvíce knihu vyzdvihují detailní popisy chování některých ras jako Gnollů, Goblinů, Beholderů atd. V těchto popisech se dozvíte jak žijí, jaká je v jejich skupinách hierarchie, jak budují své doupě atd. Upozornil bych jen na to, že se popisy chování vztahují pro svět Forgotten Realms, takže pokud převážně hrajete v jiném světě (např. Eberron), tak pro vás popisy nebudou až tak využitelné u všech ras.
If you're just starting out, you don't need this manual. But if you've already exhausted every enemy in the Monster Manual, this book is a great way to torment your players in new, cruel ways. And so the players don't miss out, the second chapter brings several new playable subraces.
Pokud hrát teprve začínáte, není nutné tuto příručku vlastnit. Volo's Guide to Monsters introduces new races and monsters, but its real value lies in expanding the lore, which reinforces the 5th edition D&D trend of encouraging Dungeon Masters and players to focus on narrative gameplay.
On the other hand, it's a bit disappointing that the print and binding quality don't quite match the high price tag, which is a recurring issue with other manuals as well.
