Dungeon Master's Guide D&D 2024 Review

Our review of the D&D 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide provides a quick assessment of the manual and a detailed video breakdown by experienced DM Gergon.

Dungeon Master's Guide D&D 2024 Review

The second book of the core trilogy for Dungeons & Dragons 2024 version is out, and I have to say, it is truly worth it. It is clear at first glance that the authors took 10 years of experience and player feedback from around the world into account. Just like with the Player's Handbook, they have worked hard to fine-tune and smooth out all the flaws, and for the most part, they have succeeded brilliantly.

The visuals in the Dungeon Master's Guide are absolutely fantastic! While the cover art might slightly dampen the overall impression, the illustrations inside are perfect. It is not just about quality—which was already high 10 years ago—but this time they went much deeper. The vast majority of the illustrations contain "easter eggs" or references to iconic characters from the entire history of Dungeons & Dragons, dating back to the first edition. Furthermore, the content of these illustrations is dynamic; they tell a story and serve as a great inspiration for Dungeon Masters (DMs) to create their own stories, NPCs, and locations. This is exactly how illustrations in an RPG manual should look and function.

The structure of the manual is also much better than ever before. Practically everything from the 2014 book has been rearranged into a logical order. First, it introduces the DM to how the game works, providing tips and tricks on how to run and organize sessions. Only then does it move on to specific practical matters. Additionally, there are plenty of clear tables summarizing important information.

The Tools chapter for Dungeon Masters is a perfect summary of rules for creating traps, poisons, monsters, and custom spells. The following two chapters teach DMs how to create their own adventures and, subsequently, an entire campaign and setting. Both chapters contain a wealth of important information as well as practical examples. Whether it is 5 short adventures or the entire Greyhawk setting, which some players have been waiting for for literal decades.

The Treasures chapter is, as always, packed with a multitude of Magic Items accompanied by beautiful illustrations.

new addition is the Bastions chapter, which gives players the opportunity not only to start building their own stronghold but also to develop it in an interesting way and use it for specific gameplay effects that help them directly in their adventures. It is not just some useless fluff—so a player can feel good about owning a little house somewhere far away—but a great mini-game that can even be played outside of game sessions.

At the end of the manual, you will find an Appendix containing an Index of many famous characters and locations from Dungeons & Dragons history with brief descriptions, so even new players can easily look up who that Mordenkainen fellow is, after whom some spells are named, and so on.

Maps and Tracking sheets are just the icing on the cake, raising the utility of this manual even higher.

It might look like the authors paid me for advertising and promotion, but that is not the case. I am genuinely enthusiastic about this manual, and as a DM, I consider it truly well-written and useful. I recommend it with a clear conscience. 👍
