The Dungeons & Dragons: Essentials Kit is an entry-level set for new players containing everything you need to create characters and play the world-famous Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
The set supports a DM and a party of 1 to 5 adventurers. Inside the box, you will find a concise rulebook (64 pages) including rules for Fighter, Cleric, Wizard, Rogue, and Bard classes from levels 1 to 6. It also features the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure written by Chris Perkins.

This set is a major upgrade to the Starter Set. It’s clear the guys at Wizards have learned from their mistakes over the years.
The biggest improvement over the Starter Set is the rulebook. It includes character creation, two subclasses for every class, and on top of the core four—fighter, cleric, wizard, and rogue—you also get a fantastic bard. The rules feature a wider selection of spells than the Starter Set and feel much more cohesive overall.
You don't need any Basic Rules in PDF anymore; this is a full-fledged replacement. In terms of content density, it’s the perfect equivalent and successor to the classic DrD Beginner's Rules version 1.6.
Compared to the Starter Set, the box also includes some nice extras, like a larger set of dice, a double-sided map (!) featuring the town of Phandalin on one side and its surroundings on the other, a stack of blank character sheets (though you won't find pre-generated ones in the box), and various cards for conditions, magic items, initiative, and sidekicks.
I want to highlight the sidekicks. They are simplified player characters that let you play D&D with just two people (one acts as the DM, the other plays their character accompanied by sidekicks). Sidekicks also work great as player characters for younger kids (7+).
And then there's the adventure. It’s pretty good, has some surprises, and sandbox lovers will adore it. For me, however, it was a bit of a letdown. The Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure from the Starter Set is a personal favorite: the best beginner adventure I’ve ever played and one of the best overall. It had pace and momentum.
In contrast, the adventure here, Dragon of Icespire Peak, can sometimes drag due to its sandbox nature. Plus, the quest structure feels a bit like World of Warcraft.
If I ended my review here, I’d give it 4 stars. But the box also includes a 50% discount coupon for the Player's Handbook on D&D Beyond and a code to unlock this adventure and two follow-up adventures for free on D&D Beyond. And for that, it definitely earns that fifth star.
Tato sada je v mnohém vylepšený Starter Set. Je vidět, že kluci od Wizardů se za ty roky poučili z chyb.
Největším přínosem oproti Starter Setu jsou v této krabici pravidla. Obsahují i tvorbu postav, každé povolání má dva obory a kromě základní čtveřice - bojovník, klerik, kouzelník a tulák - je tu navíc i skvělý bard. Pravidla obsahují i větší výběr kouzel, než byl ve Starter Setu a celkově působí mnohem kompaktnějším dojmem.
Už nepotřebujete žádná Basic Rules v PDF, toto je plnohodnotná náhrada. Z hlediska hutnosti obsahu jde také o ideální obdobu a nástupce DrD Pravidel pro začátečníky verze 1.6.
V krabici jsou oproti Starter Setu také nějaké blbinky navíc, co ale potěší, jako je větší zásoba kostek, oboustranná mapa (!) - z jedné strany městečka Fendelin a z druhé jeho okolí, zásoba prázdných deníků (ale předpřipravené v krabici nenajdete) a různé karty - stavů, kouzelných předmětů, iniciativy a parťáků.
U parťáků se chci zastavit. Jsou to zjednodušené hráčské postavy a díky nim si zahrajete D&D i ve dvou lidech (jeden hraje PJ a druhý svou hráčskou postavu doplněnou o parťáky). Parťáci se taky hodí jako hráčské postavy pro mladší děti (7+).
A pak je tu dobrodružství. Je docela dobré, má některá překvapení a ti, co milují sandbox, si ho zamilují. Pro mě ale bylo zklamáním. Dobrodružství Ztracený důl Fendelveru ze Starter Setu je pro mě srdcovka: nejlepší začátečnické dobrodružství, co jsem kdy hrál a jedno z nejlepších vůbec. Mělo grády a spád.
Oproti tomu zdejší dobrodružství Drak z Ledového štítu může občas kvůli své sandboxovosti drhnout. Navíc úkolově trochu připomíná styl questů z World of Warcraft.
kdybych končil svou recenzi tady, dal bych 4 hvězdy. Krabice ale obsahuje i kupon na 50% slevu pro Player's Handbook na DnD Beyond a kód na DnD Beyond pro místní dobrodružství i dvě návazná zcela zdarma. A za to si tu pátou hvězdu rozhodně zaslouží.
As a total D&D beginner, I'm super happy with this. The set contains everything you need to play or create your own adventure. Hours of fun guaranteed.
Jako uplny novacek do D&D jsem maximalne spokojen. Set obsahuje vse potrebne pro hrani, nebo vytvoreni vlastniho dobrodruzstvi. Zabava na xxx hodin.
Honestly, my buddy bought the starter set, and I really liked the Lost Mine of Phandelver (LMoP) campaign. It's perfect for beginners, but I also wanted to step into the shoes of a DM, so I bought the Essentials Kit for our group of newbies.
This kit features the Dragon of Icespire Peak campaign for levels 1–6. Unlike LMoP, it includes character creation guides and cards for NPCs, effects, quests, and magic items. It also comes with dice for character creation and gameplay: 2d20, 1d12, 2d10, 1d8, 4d6, and 1d4.
I kept my players entertained for about 150 hours, including the three sequels on D&D Beyond. It’s not a 100% scripted story, which makes it great for new DMs. You can fill in the gaps with your own ideas.
My party and I really enjoyed this campaign. I especially appreciate the code for D&D Beyond (https://www.dndbeyond.com/), not just for continuing the adventure up to level 13, but also for the 50% discount on the Player's Handbook (PHB). It’s a great resource for beginners—you’ll definitely get your money's worth if you have under 1,000 hours of playtime.
Upřímně, kámoš si koupil starter set, kampaň Lost Mine of Phandelver (dále jen LMoP) se mi velice líbila. Pro začátečníky ideálni, ovšem také jsem chtěl být v kůži DM/PJ a pro naši partu, která byla plná začátečníků, jsem koupil Essential kit.
Tento kit nabízí kampaň Dragon of Icespire Peak, pro postavy 1 - 6 úrovně. Oproti LMoP má návod na tvorbu postav, karty nejen s NPC, efetky, ale také s Questy a Magic Itemy. Dále kostky pro tvorbu postav a hru. 2D20, 1D12, 2D10,1D8, 4D6 a 1D4.
Hráče jsem udržel u zábavy z této hry asi 150 hodin, společně s třemi pokračováními na DD Beyond. Není to 100% napsaný příběh, a proto je také dobrý pro nováčky DM. Můžete doplnit vynechaná místa v příběhu vlastními nápady.
Velice mě a ostatní z party tato kampaň bavila a opravdu oceňuji kód pro DD Beyond (https://www.dndbeyond.com/) nejen pro pokračování dobrodružství s postavami do úrovně 13, ale také sleva 50% na Player's Handbook (dále jen PHB), která je velice dobrá pro nováčku (pod 1000 hod herního času ji 100% využijete.
A box containing everything beginner (or lazy advanced :-) ) players need for levels 1-6. Think of it as the D&D equivalent of a starter set.
The English in the rules is simple and readable. The illustrations are, of course, top-notch.
You'll appreciate the extra dice – besides the standard set, the box includes three additional six-sided dice and a second twenty-sided die. The Dungeon Master's screen, featuring atmospheric art on one side and essential tables on the other, keeps the game flowing by minimizing the need to flip through the rulebook. The cards describing magic items and character conditions are a nice bonus.
Krabice, která obsahuje vše co začínající (nebo líní pokročilí :-) ) hráči potřebují pro 1-6 úroveň. Prakticky taková obdoba "dračákovských" pravidel pro začátečníky.
Angličtina pravidlech je jednoduchá a čtivá. Ilustrace samozřejmě na špičkové úrovni.
Potěší zásoba kostek - mimo základní sadu v krabici naleznete další 3 šestistěnky a druhou dvacetistěnku. Stínítko pro gamemastera s atmosférickou ilustrací na jedné straně a s důležitými tabulkami na straně druhé by mělo zabránit zbytečnému listování v pravidlech ve prospěch plynulosti hry. Karty s popisem magických předmětů a stavů (kondici) postav jsou příjemným bonusem.
The price-to-quality ratio is excellent. For a relatively low price, you get an adventure, a DM screen, a set of dice (plus an extra 3d6 and 1d20), and a small rulebook. Buying these items separately would cost you twice as much. The artwork is spot on.
We met about once a month, and the adventure took us roughly 2 years to finish. My only complaint is with the adventure itself. The plot hook was basically non-existent, and a TPK lurked around every corner, even at higher character levels. It's up to the DM to tweak and adjust every encounter, otherwise, your players will have to roll up a new character for every session.
Pomer cena/kvalita je fakt výborný. Za pomerne nízku cenu dostanete dobrodružstvo, DM screen, sadu kociek (a k nej 3d6 a 1d20) a malú príručku. Ak by sa mali tieto veci kupovať samostatne tak zaplatíte raz toľko. Artwork sa fakt podaril.
Stretávali sme sa približne raz za mesiac a dobrodružstvo nám trvalo asi 2 roky. Jedinú výčitku dávam dobrodružstvu samotnému. Plot hook v podstate absentoval a TPK číhalo za každým rohom, do konca aj na vyššej úrovni postáv. Je na DM aby si každý stret upravil a prispôsobil lebo hráči budú musieť ku každej hre prísť s novou postavou.
