Star Wars lightsabers and their replicas

The lightsaber, the legendary weapon from the Star Wars film series. Many consider it one of the main reasons for the popularity of this universe. Back when kids still ran around the woods, it wasn't rare to see them chasing each other with sticks while making that iconic "vwooom" sound. Many of us still do it today.

A bit of history

In the Star Wars canon, lightsabers have a history spanning thousands of years. They were used long before the era of the Galactic Empire seen in the films. A lightsaber consists of only a few parts: the hilt, stabilization rings, magnets, a power cell (do these things even need charging?), and most importantly, a pair of kyber crystals that emit the blade and determine its color. Of course, you also need a bit of the Force; after all, building a lightsaber is the final test for every Jedi apprentice.

The lightsaber is the ultimate weapon, stopped by only a very limited number of materials. A strike from its blade used to wipe the smile off anyone or anything. That is, until the latest movies and series came along. Now, it seems like practically everyone survives a hit. Maybe their batteries are running low…

How did the lightsaber come to be?

George Lucas wanted lightsabers in his upcoming film from the very beginning. He was inspired by the serials he devoured in his youth. In his world, such a sword would be a common item that practically everyone carried. Eventually, he decided to make them more interesting by adding a "laser effect." That was just a small step away from making the lightsaber an exclusive weapon for Jedi knights and their Sith adversaries.

Filming something like that was quite a challenge, though. Actors used swords cobbled together from all sorts of things, equipped with rotating blades that ideally reflected light, and the result was then hand-drawn frame by frame, or later digitally edited. The result was worth it. Today, the lightsaber is one of the most recognizable products of pop culture.

References to them appear regularly everywhere. They've appeared in The Simpsons, Futurama, Rick and Morty, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, and an endless number of film and other parodies, led by the brilliant Spaceballs.

Would a lightsaber actually work?

Every fan has surely dreamed of owning such a sword at some point. It's cool, even if I think it would be a very dangerous toy in practice, especially for the user. That famous "vwooom" sounds great until the blade cuts your leg off. But would such a sword work in the real world? Probably yes. Renowned physicist and science popularizer Michio Kaku ranks it among theoretically possible inventions. The main problem, however, is the typical limitation of the blade (light simply travels from point A and continues practically to infinity unless it hits an obstacle), but above all, the power source, which is currently beyond the technological capabilities of our civilization.

A variant that doesn't use light but flame—or rather, a burning stream of plasma (ionized gas)—is doing a bit better. The video below shows what that can look like. But even in this case, you have to consider a powerful energy source, and the result doesn't look much like the elegant, miniature solution known from the films.
