Discover the world of LARP, live-action role-playing games. Tips for beginners on how to create a character, choose a costume, find a suitable event, and join the player community.
What do you find in the article?
Being a fantasy fan can be quite demanding at times. In books, movies, series, and games, we constantly follow the journeys of characters diving into various adventures that, despite the danger, we find quite impressive. Often, you find yourself wishing you could experience something similar yourself. Unfortunately, in our world, it's not exactly common to slay a dragon, save a damsel in distress, or participate in a grandiose battle against hordes of bloodthirsty orcs. However, there is one way. So, craving some excitement with a sword at your side? Your ticket to it is LARP.
What actually is LARP?
The acronym stands for Live Action Role Play. If you decide to participate in such an event, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a fictional world that you help create yourself. Before you head out to a LARP event, you'll need to come up with a character to "transform" into for the duration of the event. In the vast majority of cases, roleplay is obviously important, so your backstory, name, and other specifics of your new self will come in handy. If this description reminds you suspiciously of a classic RPG, you're right. The essence is basically the same; the only difference is that you experience the entire plot firsthand.

An integral part of every LARP is, of course, a costume. In this regard, there are no limits to your imagination. You can buy a costume or make it yourself. You can also combine both approaches. However, if you are a beginner LARPer, I recommend starting with something a bit simpler until you find out if you really want to pursue this activity. You also need to keep one more thing in mind. You can't use the same costume in every LARP you attend. If you were craving something with a dystopian vibe after a fantasy experience, it's worth noting that your dwarven warrior would likely stick out like a sore thumb in a post-apocalyptic world.
Another integral part is, of course, your weapon. It's entirely up to you which one you choose. Practically everything is available, from spears and battle axes to standard swords and daggers. Everything is usually made of foam or soft materials to prevent injuries during combat. If you crave absolute authenticity, it is possible to attend events with real metal weapons. However, for safety reasons, these are unsharpened. Even so, it is often a requirement to wear a gambeson or chainmail, again to prevent injury.

If you are more drawn to archery than man-to-man combat, you can add a weapon like a bow or crossbow to your gear. Again, you won't avoid safety measures. Arrows are equipped with soft tips so that your opponent doesn't turn into a pincushion in the heat of battle.
Types of LARP
There are many types of LARP. There are fantasy-themed LARPs, which are probably the most well-known. This is exactly what most people imagine when they hear the word LARP for the first time. Besides that, we can also find LARPs that pride themselves on historical authenticity – such as medieval reenactments, battle reconstructions, and western events. However, if you want to enjoy a LARP without specific costume requirements and an emphasis on authenticity, and an automatic rifle suits you better than a sword, you'll find your place at post-apocalyptic LARPs.

But how do you get into LARP in the Czech Republic? There are more such events organized in our country than you might think. You can find a detailed overview of many of them on the larp.cz website, where you can calmly browse through clearly listed parameters and requirements, along with dates and locations. At the same time, the organizers' website is available for every listed event. For complete newcomers to the world of LARP, the Facebook group Larp CZ is also useful. If you are looking for a tip on the best event according to your preferences, advice on creating a costume, or choosing a weapon, don't hesitate to write to the group, and more experienced players will be happy to help.
Where is it worth going?
To make finding your first event a little easier, I decided to add my own recommendations. For fans of Tolkien's work, there is the Bitva o Středozem (Battle for Middle-earth), which has been part of Czech LARP history since 2010. If you attend this usually three-day event, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the salvation of Middle-earth yourself, or conversely, join the orcs and try to bring chaos and ruin to their lands. However, if you are looking for something more lighthearted to start with, an event where you can find time to relax and unwind with friends in addition to the role-playing itself, there is Helmáč for you. Both LARPs take place this August in the South Moravian Region. Whether you decide to attend just one, both events, or want to find a completely different event on your own, you'll always be entertained.

Since the nineties, when the trend of live-action role-playing appeared here, LARP has come a long way. In the beginning, it was just groups of enthusiasts organizing events with friends and trying to bring to life a world of fantasy that we were forbidden to enter outside the pages of books and television screens. Nowadays, however, the community has grown to unprecedented proportions, and as soon as you find yourself at an event for the first time, you will see why. A friendly atmosphere, lots of fun activities, a main program that is guaranteed to absorb you, and above all, the opportunity to meet a lot of new people. These are just a few of the many positive things that LARP can offer. After all, if you're just missing a little friendly nudge to join the community, I advise you not to hesitate. LARP is definitely worth at least a try.
