It has been a year since we at imago launched our big blog restart. Back then, it coincided perfectly with Tolkien Reading Day, a celebration for fans of J. R. R. Tolkien, held in honor of the destruction of the One Ring in the books. It is only fitting that we return to this topic. Let's take a look at what we can play today from the world of The Lord of the Rings.

The license for The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, or The Silmarillion is powerful. Few things in the world have as many fans and adaptations. It is no wonder that board games have visited the world of Middle-earth many times. There have been dozens of such games over the years. In the Czech Republic, LOTR fans probably first encountered the paper wargaming duel Battle of Pelennor Fields, and a flood of other games soon followed. Most have been swept away by time, but that doesn't mean there is nothing to play today. Put on the unbeatable movie soundtrack while reading this article, as we introduce you to the 5 currently best Lord of the Rings board game adaptations.

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game (LCG)

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is a cooperative game for up to four players. Moreover, it is one of the best LCGs ever. LCG is a model where you can buy new cards to expand the game without relying on luck or hunting for specific cards. You buy a pack, you know what's in it, and that's it. And there is plenty to buy in this case! Last year, the game received an updated edition that is fully compatible with all the expansion packs, of which there are literally dozens.

The game itself is divided into scenarios that change dynamically during play. At the beginning, players choose from a range of well-known and lesser-known heroes and work together to defeat the game. You complete quests, collect artifacts, and fight monsters. The game itself can be tough. Some scenarios are a real challenge, and it's no shame if you fail the first time, evil wins, Middle-earth is swallowed by darkness, and the poor hobbits end up working in the mines for the rest of their lives. Often, however, a slight adjustment to your strategy or choosing a different combination of heroes is enough to find the way. Players must cooperate and stay alert. It's not enough to just admire the beautiful illustrations and hope for the best. The Lord of the Rings LCG offers a sea of fun that will definitely last for a long time.

Journeys in Middle-earth

Journeys in Middle-earth is another cooperative board game, managed by a slick mobile app. This time, we look beyond the plot of the books, although familiar characters do appear. Up to five players embark on interconnected scenarios that unfold a catchy and well-written story of good versus evil. The app runs the game. You read the story in it, build the map according to it, it determines encounters, manages combat, and throws obstacles in your way. In addition to the large map, you will regularly visit smaller buildings and locations, which often feature detective-like micro-stories. A big advantage is that even failure in a scenario doesn't mean the end of the game. You just have to count on not having a certain advantage in the next part.

If you know the equally successful board game Mansions of Madness, you probably have an idea of what to expect. Both games work very similarly. Finishing the entire base game can take around twenty hours. You can dive into the story repeatedly. The app generates slightly different details, but don't expect a completely different experience. Fortunately, there are already two large expansions and a bunch of new, beautiful, and detailed miniatures available. If you enjoy the atmosphere and the story and don't mind tapping on a screen, you definitely won't go wrong with this game.

War of the Ring

Now we are reaching a higher level! War of the Ring rightfully belongs among the best board games with a Lord of the Rings license. It is primarily a duel for two players. While it can be played with four, it's not quite the same. After all, the division into good and evil directly invites a two-player game. With War of the Ring, you get right into the plot of the book trilogy at the moment the Fellowship is formed and begins its journey in Rivendell. The Free Peoples side (Men, Elves, Dwarves, four hobbits, and one wizard) has the task of destroying the Ring in Mount Doom, and the Shadow (Sauron, Saruman, and a band of Southerners with Oliphaunts) naturally wants to prevent them, reveal the Ring, and ideally hang the bearers' heads above their fireplace. That is not the only way to win. You can forget about all the trouble with the cursed jewelry and settle it in proper battles for famous cities and places in Middle-earth.

An epic battle for the fate of Middle-earth, the box says. And it's damn right! Even though there is no fixed scenario in the game, it naturally gets you into situations known from the books and movies. Suddenly, you find yourself preparing to defend Helm's Deep and then rushing to save Minas Tirith with Gandalf at the lead. The Shadow builds an army, sends Nazgûl across the map, and is the first to conquer Osgiliath. It is very easy to forget that you are not watching a movie, but playing a board game. Magnificent! War of the Ring is big, tense, and if you don't mind a significant amount of luck or miniatures made of questionable material, I guarantee a gaming experience that few board games can offer. The game will also soon receive an equally interesting card version, which is already among the most anticipated titles.

The One Ring RPG

Tabletop RPGs (including Dungeons & Dragons or Dračí doupě) The One Ring fully utilizes the Lord of the Rings license. In one set, you get everything you need for the game - rules for the Loremaster and players, a beautiful map, character sheets, equipment, and a set of dice. You just need to learn at least the basic rules and dive into one of several prepared scenarios or invent your own. Everything depends only on the courage and quality of the Loremaster who runs the game for the others.

The One Ring is a tabletop RPG that relies more on story and atmosphere than on mechanics and rules worked out to the last detail. Advanced players have every right to grumble. But newcomers don't have to worry. Everything is wrapped in top-notch production and beautiful illustrations.

Middle-earth: Strategy Battle Game

Warhammer 40k or Middle-earth: Strategy Battle Game are examples of miniature wargames. Players face each other in battles of various units, and the winner is the one who wipes out their opponent or completes an objective. These are games that tend to take over your free time. The miniatures literally beg to be painted, and then you can display them on shelves. New ones are constantly coming out, the household budget suffers, and space runs out. And when you finally get to a game, you can easily sink dozens of hours into it. Yeah, it's a joy. :)

Middle-earth: SBG is an example of a game that very easily turns into a lifelong hobby. You can tune armies and tactics, or just paint miniatures and admire them. Thanks to such games, you will find a completely new, distinct world full of cheerful people who share the same passion. It's not for everyone, but when it clicks, it's a love for life.
