I was really looking forward to the new book by A. Sapkowski. And after 11 years, it's finally here.
I dove into it with gusto. It had a bit of a slow start, and for a moment, I even thought the author was repeating himself. Fortunately, the story picked up after a few pages, and the climax was, as always, excellent. And, of course, it features that typical, open, and perhaps slightly vulgar humor ;).
The story itself revolves around a young Geralt, who has just finished his training at the Kaer Morhen fortress and has set out on the Path for the first time to hunt monsters and help those in need. It is precisely the people he wants to protect and help who cause him the greatest evil and pain. As a young man, he encounters the dangers described in witcher manuals for the first time and discovers his witcher code. On the other hand, he also experiences the pleasant sides of his free-roaming trade and often receives help where he least expects it. He realizes that sometimes people can show gratitude for his often reckless, spontaneous, but meritorious and selfless deeds, which he performs in his desire for a better and more just world.
On his journey, he meets some characters we already know well from the main saga. He begins to build long-term friendships, discovers hidden truths, and uncovers secrets.
Classic themes appear, and moral questions are addressed. It is primarily about the monsters within each of us and how little it takes for us to become them.
I won't reveal too much to avoid spoiling the surprises, but in the book, we learn, for example, that Vesemir was not Geralt's only teacher and how it actually went with that “famous” pamphlet called Monstrum, or a Description of the Witcher…
This book is essentially a prequel to all the other works, and Sapkowski has managed to write another very fine part of the great story about Geralt. You can easily read it as the very first book of the saga. And perhaps that is exactly what the author intended.
It has perhaps only one flaw – it is short. You can finish the approximately 280 pages in a weekend. And there is nothing left to do but wait and hope that there will be more stories about the famous Witcher.

Na novú knižku od A. Sapkowskeho som sa naozaj tešil. A po 11. rokoch je konečne tu.
S chuťou som sa do nej pustil. Mala najskôr taký nejaký pomalý rozbeh, dokonca sa mi chvíľku zdalo, že autor vykráda sám seba. Našťastie sa príbeh po pár stranách rozbehol a vyvrcholenie bolo ako vždy, výborné. A samozrejme nechýba ani typický a otvorený, pre niekoho možno trocha vulgárny humor ;).
Samotný príbeh sa točí okolo mladého Geralta, ktorý práve ukončil svoj výcvik na hradisku Kaer Morhen a vydal sa prvý krát na stezku, lov príšer a pomoc potrebným. A sú to práve ľudia, ktorých chce chrániť a pomáhať im, a tí mu spôsobia najvačšie zlo a bolesť. Ako mladíček sa po prvý krát stretáva s nebezpečenstvami popísanými v zaklínačských príručkách a objavuje svoj zaklínačský kódex. Na druhej strane spoznáva aj príjemné stránky svojho slobodného remesla a častokrát sa mu dostane pomoci tam, kde by ju nečakal. Respektíve zisťuje, že občas dokážu niektorí ľudia prejaviť i vďačnosť za jeho často neuvážené, spontánne ale záslužné a nezištné skutky, ktoré vykoná v túžbe po lepšom a spravodlivom svete.
Na svojej ceste sa zoznamuje s niektorými nám už dobre známymi postavami z veľkej ságy. Začína si budovať dlhodobé priateľstvá, zisťuje niektoré skryté pravdy a odkrýva tajomstvá. Klasicky sa objavujú známe motívy a riešia morálne otázky. Je to predovšetkým o netvoroch v každom z nás a ako málo stačí k tomu aby sa z nás stali.
Nebudem príliš prezrádzať, aby som nekazil prekvapenia, ale v knižke sa napríklad dozvedáme, že Vesemir nebol Geraltov jediný učiteľ a ako to vlastne bolo s tým “slávnym” pamfletom zvaným Anonymus: Monstrum čili Vědmáka vypodobnění…
Táto knižka je vlastne takým prequelom k všetkým ostatným dielam a Sapkowskému sa podarilo napísať ďaľšiu za mňa veľmi peknú časť veľkého príbehu o Geraltovi. Bez problémov ju možno kľudne čítať ako úplne prvú knihu tejto ságy. A práve možno to autor aj tak zamýšľal.
Má asi len jedinú chybu – je krátka. Približne 280 strán zvládnete prečítať za víkend. A nezostáva nič iné, len si počkať a dúfať, že budú ešte nejaké ďaľšie príbehy o slávnom Zaklínačovi.

I'm writing this knowing that Sapkowski is working on another book. I enjoyed Season of Storms. It was different from the other books, but no less interesting. It's set in the period when Geralt was still a greenhorn roaming around Kaedwen.
Píšu to v době, kdy vím, že Sapkowski píše další knížku. Krkavci mě bavili. Bylo to jiné než ostatní knížky, ale ne méně zajímavé. Je to z období, kdy byl Geralt ještě holobrádek a pohyboval se po Kaedwenu.

Despite damage during shipping, I was satisfied because the e-shop's response was quick and truly helpful. I had to play the restorer since a replacement piece wasn't available. Beautiful craftsmanship. I recommend ordering items separately to avoid damage during transit.
I přes poškození před/ při přepravě jsem byl spokojen, jelikož reakce e-shopu byla rychlá a vskutku vstřícná. Jen to chtělo si pak zahrát na restaurátora, jelikož náhradní kus nebyl k dispozici. Krásné zpracování. Doporučím objednávat zvlášť, aby se v přepravě nepoškodilo.
