While working on The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien created a wealth of artwork—from rough sketches to detailed drawings and paintings. Only a few were intended for publication; the rest served as tools to maintain consistency in his writing. These sketches often capture not the final form, but the genesis of places and artifacts as they appeared to Tolkien during the writing process.

In this book, you will find sketches of maps of the Shire and Middle-earth, numerous runic inscriptions, and scenes from Middle-earth. More than half of these high-quality scans and photographs from Tolkien's archive are published for the very first time in this beautiful book.
