These sketches often capture the genesis of places and artifacts as they appeared to Tolkien during the creative process, rather than their final form.

The book is in English, so it takes me a bit longer to read than I'd like, but it's still a beautifully and intricately crafted book. Combined with the annotated drawings from the professor's desk, the result is top-notch!
