Cattle raiding was a celebrated tradition in ancient Ireland. Heroes were praised in songs for their ability to steal their neighbors' livestock. Many historical chronicles contain detailed descriptions of these deeds, and the Cattle Raid of Cooley is even featured in the oldest and most important books of Irish mythology.

Kings commanded bands of cattle raiders during a ceremonial event called "creach righ," which marked the beginning of a new monarch's reign. During this event, they seized cattle from neighboring kingdoms as well as from the Viking raiders invading Ireland.
Ultimately, rival neighbors stole cattle from each other's pastures. In this game, you organize raids on your neighbor's pastures with the goal of stealing their herds.

In Tain, you play as the leader of a small clan striving to gain the wealth and power of your neighbors. Throughout the game, you will send members of your clan to liberate cattle from your opponents' hands, sneak into their homes, and search for hidden jewelry. The one who acquires the most wealth wins.
