How to care for leather? It only takes a few tips and the right products—it's definitely not rocket science! Learn everything about basic care for leather boots, belts, and other accessories in the lines below. We hope we haven't missed any risky situations that might arise during your adventures—whether at a LARP, a con, in other dimensions, or out in space.

What you need for basic maintenance

Conditioning and softening balms for longevity

• leather oil emulsion
• leather balm – small or large
• application sponge

Reliable waterproofing against moisture and other whims of Granny Weatherwax

• leather balm EXTREME
• mink oil

A helper for gently removing brutal dirt

• leather soap, larger 200g pack or smaller 40g pack
• and again, the sponge

Sometimes signs of wear are actually a plus, like for a fantasy costume. In that case, we still recommend at least the balm—so you can enjoy that "patina" for as long as possible.

Seven practical tips

1. Protection against moisture: Protect leather goods from water and dampness! Though that's a bit of a problem at a LARP, right? Treat the leather with mink oil or leather balm.
2. Protection against the sun: Direct sunlight can cause leather color to fade. Don't leave your leather items in the sun for too long.
3. Protection against excessive heat: Don't place leather items near a fire and try to deflect 100% of fireballs.
4. Protection against cracking: When you fly to Arrakis, make sure your leather gear stays supple and doesn't crack—treat it with leather balm.
5. Remove dust: A dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush will take care of dust, whether it's stardust or the coal dust from around Mordor.
6. Messy battlefields, swamps, piles of dead enemies: Remove dirt from the leather with a damp cloth. Plain water or special leather soap is enough. Don't scrub too hard so you don't scratch the leather.
7. Favorite resting place: Leather likes dry, dark, and well-ventilated spaces. Leave damp dungeons and warrior graves to the ghouls.
