Carcassonne: South Seas

Alternative products

Description

Carcassonne: South Seas plays similarly to the classic Carcassonne. In each turn, you place landscape tiles and optionally deploy your meeples. Instead of standard roads, cities, and farms, you use your meeples to collect bananas, seashells, and fish. Your ships then transport these goods to merchants in exchange for points.

Carcassonne: South Seas is the first game in the new "Carcassonne Around the World" series.

The game is in English.

Package contents:

  • 73 landscape tiles
  • 24 ship tokens
  • 1 rulebook

  • 60 wooden goods tokens
  • 20 wooden islanders

How reviews work?

Simona M.

A video convinced me to buy this game. It shares some elements with the classic Carcassonne: a starting tile, meeples for 5 players, building islands (= cities), closing bridges (= roads), and completing markets (= monasteries), but other mechanics are completely new. For completed islands or bridges, you collect goods based on the number of banana or shell icons rather than the number of tiles. Fish are caught only in enclosed waters; otherwise, you use a fisherman. Unfinished islands, bridges, and seas (fish) provide points at the end of the game just as if they were completed. You trade goods for ships (the same applies to completed markets), and their value at the end of the game, combined with unused goods, determines the winner (fishermen do not score completed islands in their seas).

It took us a while to fully understand and correctly apply the rules (which are only available in English). The game is quite fast-paced and, thanks to the new elements, richer than the traditional base Carcassonne. If the original game, with or without expansions, has started to bore you, get this version.
