Magic: The Gathering 2027 Sets Revealed: Complete Overview

Wizards of the Coast has unveiled the release schedule for Magic: The Gathering in 2027, declaring it the "Year of the Gathering." Don't expect a massive influx of sets, though – after 2026 brought seven sets and a slew of crossovers (from Marvel to The Hobbit), next year will see a bit of a slowdown. In 2027, we will see a total of six main sets. The publisher is splitting them evenly: three will belong to the classic Magic world, known as Universes Within, and three will feature collaborations with other brands, known as Universes Beyond.

For fans of traditional lore, the developers have prepared three thematically distinct sets:

Nauctis: The Sunken Realm (February 5, 2027): The first set of the year takes us to an underwater realm. The story revolves around rising tensions between two warring kingdoms and the heroes' struggle to save their home from being swallowed by the ocean depths. Expect deep-sea humans, merfolk, homarids, seals, and terrifying creatures from the abyss.

Kamigawa: Titanbreach (June 4, 2027): After visiting the planes of Lorwyn and Strixhaven in 2026, we are returning to cyberpunk Kamigawa. A massive event will unfold here as the monster home plane, Ikoria, crashes into it. The main theme of the set will be the clash between giant monsters (kaiju) from Ikoria and next-gen mechs from Kamigawa.

Zhalfir (October 1, 2027): The last of the in-universe sets is intended as a love letter to long-time Magic fans. The set will embrace the afrofantasy subgenre, introduce entirely new forms of magic, and bring the legendary chronomancer Teferi Akosa back to the scene.

Universes Beyond Leaning More Toward Fantasy

While specific brands for the upcoming Universes Beyond crossovers haven't been confirmed yet, we do know their release dates. They will hit store shelves on April 5, August 6, and November 19, 2027.

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks addressed future collaborations in a recent financial report, stating that the partners for 2027 will be more closely aligned with the fantasy genre. He was responding to player criticism regarding recent crossovers (e.g., Marvel), where fans disliked the game being set in a modern, real-world environment. Cocks reassured fans by declaring that none of the new sets will take place in New York, keeping the game closer to its roots.

Speculation is swirling around brands like Game of Thrones, Elden Ring, Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, The Legend of Zelda, or The Witcher, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
