An Overview of Mark of the Odd RPGs

Are you interested in minimalist RPGs? We've prepared a big overview of games built on the Into the Odd system. Find your favorite genre!

An Overview of Mark of the Odd RPGs

The original game Into The Odd is an innovative and inspiring minimalist RPG by Chris McDowall. It has inspired many in the RPG community to create derivatives, hacks, or genre variants—the Mark of the Odd family. In this article, I will focus on those that caught my attention the most.

First, a brief introduction to Into the Odd itself, which balances on the edge of fantasy, industrial horror, and steampunk, utilizing elements of cosmic weirdness. Players take on the roles of explorers seeking wealth and mysterious artifacts called Arcanum.

Mechanically, the game is built on simplicity—characters have three attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Willpower), and all actions are resolved by rolling under their values. Combat is fast and deadly, as every attack hits automatically, and damage is rolled immediately. The game also eliminates traditional classes, with characters defined by their equipment.

The original version was released in 2014, while the 2022 remastered edition brought expanded content and new visuals by Johan Nohr (MÖRK BORG). In the Czech Republic, Into The Odd Remastered was published in 2024 by Mytago under the title Do podivna.

Swords, Magic, and Brave Mice: Fantasy RPGs

Mausritter

In this game, players portray small, brave mouse heroes. From a mouse's perspective, the setting is a vast and dangerous world where players face threats like cats, owls, or humans.

Mechanically, the game differs from Into the Odd primarily through its innovative card-based inventory system, which combines equipment, conditions, and magic, as well as its emphasis on minimalist rules for quick character creation and sandbox adventures. You can learn more about Mausritter on our blog.

Cairn

A dark fantasy game focused on exploring the mysterious and dangerous "Wood," full of strange creatures, hidden treasures, and unspeakable horrors. The setting is minimalist and merely suggested, allowing players and the Warden (GM) to flesh out the world as needed.

Mechanically, the game combines systems from Into the Odd and Knave while maintaining rule simplicity. Characters have no fixed classes and are generated quickly and randomly.

Blades into the Odd

This is a dark Victorian fantasy RPG that combines the setting of Blades in the Dark with the minimalist rules of the Into the Odd system. The setting is the city of Duskwall, full of intrigue, the supernatural, and criminal gangs, where players portray members of thieving crews trying to survive and thrive in this dangerous environment.

Mechanically, the game adopts the simple Into the Odd system, which emphasizes fast gameplay and deadly combat, and adapts it for Blades in the Dark-style stories. It adds elements like resources, gang relationships, and action planning, while keeping the mechanics minimalist.

Block, Dodge, Parry

An expansion for the Cairn RPG by Yochai Gal. With version 2.0, it is fully playable as a standalone game—players can use it as an add-on to Cairn, Into the Odd, Electric Bastionland, or other Mark of the Odd games, or as a complete system for their own adventures. Block, Dodge, Parry adds many new mechanics and tools, such as expanded defense options (blocking, dodging, and parrying), a background-based skill system, rules for injuries, diseases, social conflicts, and more. It focuses on integrating fiction into the rules and providing meaningful choices to players during the game.

Odd Knaves

Odd Knaves is an RPG that combines the minimalist systems of Into the Odd and Knave, creating a hybrid ruleset for OSR (Old School Renaissance) style play. The setting is not fixed, but the game is designed to support exploration and adventure stories in any fantasy world, from dungeons to the wilderness.

Mechanically, the game merges elements of both systems: the simplicity and deadly combat of Into the Odd with the inventory-oriented approach and character flexibility of Knave. Players can play classless, with character roles defined by their equipment and creative approach. The game supports quick character creation, emergent storytelling, and easy compatibility with other OSR products. If the term OSR (Old School Renaissance) is new to you, I recommend reading our blog post What is OSR.

Brawl of the Odd

Brawl of the Odd is an RPG focused on duels and PVP arenas, compatible with various systems, including Into the Odd and other Mark of the Odd games. The setting is not fixed, as the game is designed as a module that can be implemented into any world or campaign where players want to resolve conflicts through arena combat.

Mechanically, the game adds structured rules for arena-style combat between players and NPCs. It includes options for various attack types, tactics, and environmental interactions, encouraging creativity and strategy during fights. The rules are simple and easily integrated into other systems.

Detachment

A skirmish wargame based on the Into the Odd system, adapted for fast and simple miniature combat. The setting is not fixed, but the game focuses on conflicts between Warbands in diverse environments, where players complete objectives like retrieving treasures or eliminating enemies.

Mechanically, the game retains the minimalist approach of Into the Odd but adds rules for controlling "Detachments"—units representing larger groups of fighters. These Detachments function as single entities with multiple HP, improved damage (d12 against individual targets), and immunity to standard attacks unless they are "explosive" or "large-scale enough." Players can create their own units using a point system and manage resources during combat.

Runecairn

Runecairn is a post-apocalyptic Viking fantasy RPG inspired by games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring.

The setting takes place after Ragnarök, when most of the nine worlds of Norse mythology have been destroyed, the gods have fallen, and players take on the roles of Vikings trying to survive in a melancholic and inhospitable world full of ruins, monsters, and secrets.

Mechanically, the game is based on the Cairn system but adds elements inspired by soulslike games. Instead of Hit Protection, it uses Resilience, which combines physical and mental endurance (Vitality and Vigour).

Players can lose Resilience during combat or failed actions, and upon reaching zero, they become a "Shade"—a hollow, lifeless being. Bonfires serve as safe zones for resting, recovery, and strengthening characters using "Souls," which act as both currency and experience points. The game also includes an expanded system of weapons, armor, and special abilities, as well as tables for Omens upon failure.

Weird North

Weird North is a sword & sorcery RPG that builds on the Into the Odd system and adapts it for play in a strange, mysterious world full of magic and ruins. The setting focuses on players as wandering mercenaries and adventurers exploring a vast, enigmatic world full of dangers and opportunities.

Mechanically, the game retains the simplicity of Into the Odd but adds elements that support world-building and emergent storytelling. It contains tools for generating environments, NPCs, and events using tables, allowing for easy preparation and improvisation during play. The game is designed as both a system and a toolkit that can be used for your own adventures or to adapt existing modules.

The game was created by James Chip and is available as an A6 zine or PDF on itch.io.

Skorne

dark fantasy RPG inspired by works like Dark Souls and Berserk. The setting takes place in a world ruled by the demonic prince Skorne and his armies, where players portray renegades fighting to overthrow tyrants and liberate enslaved people.

Mechanically, the game uses a simple system with minimal dice rolling. It includes 42 unique "Renegade Packages" that define character abilities, and many tables for generating environments, enemies, and events. The game has three clear endings: defeating Skorne, the destruction of the world, or the death of all renegades.

Brighter Worlds

fantasy RPG that combines minimalist rules with extensive character customization options. The setting is flexible, allowing players to explore worlds full of magic, adventure, and absurd humor. The game supports a lighter tone, with mechanics reflecting a creative and interactive approach to storytelling.

Mechanically, the game is based on Cairn, Electric Bastionland, and Macchiato Monsters, but adds a full spell system (50 spells and 50 rituals), unique classes called "Callings," and a "step dice" system (d4 to d12) instead of the traditional roll-under-attribute. Characters progress by recording significant moments in an "Epitaph," which serves as an experience system. The game also includes tables for generating equipment that reflects character attributes.

A Journey into the Past: Historical and Ancient RPGs

Pike & Shot

An add-on for Into the Odd that brings the game's minimalist system to the 17th century, specifically the era of musketeers, pikemen, and dramatic battles. The setting is a historical environment where players can experience conflicts inspired by the Thirty Years' War, the English Civil War, and other significant events of the time.

Mechanically, the game retains the core Into the Odd rules but adds new elements reflecting 17th-century military tactics and technology. Players can use special equipment like muskets and face challenges associated with leading battles in this historical era. The add-on also includes tools for creating scenarios and environments.

The game was created by PelleP and is available on itch.io as part of an Into the Odd hack collection. This add-on is ideal for players who want to combine simple rules with historical context and tactical challenges.

The game includes 36 different character backgrounds, 6 of which have access to a modular magic system based on intonations. Knights of the Road

An alternative history and monster-hunting RPG based on the Into the Odd system. The setting is a dystopian version of the early 20th century during the Dust Bowl in the USA, where players portray members of the International Brotherhood of Itinerant Sellswords (IBIS)—wandering monster hunters who travel by rail and take contracts to eliminate supernatural threats like werewolves, vampires, or other legendary creatures.

Mechanically, the game retains the simplicity of Into the Odd but adds new elements specific to its environment.
