Contains spoilers: Destroyer of Worlds is an official cinematic scenario for the Alien RPG. Players take on the roles of Colonial Marines (and others) sent to the icy planet of Ariarcus amidst protests, sabotage, and a looming civil war. At first, it looks like a standard military mission—find a few deserters. But things quickly spiral out of control, turning into a paranoid horror story featuring xenomorphs. The atmosphere is excellent, but as a GM, I had to overcome a few major hurdles.
Atmosphere. This adventure features a strong world. Ariarcus feels like a believable, living place that is falling apart. Players don't feel like heroes, but rather pawns in a larger game that ground them down before they even understood the rules. Stress, distrust, uncertainty—it all works perfectly here.
The three-act structure helps maintain the pace and dole out information. Each act pushes the tension a bit further until everything explodes. The individual character agendas (including personal interests, secrets, and goals) create conflict within the group, which the Alien RPG encourages.
I also really appreciate the graphic design—the colony map, atmospheric illustrations, and pre-generated characters. All of this helps both the GM and the players immerse themselves in the game.
Running this scenario isn't easy. It has a lot of characters, locations, and factions—the UPP, the Company, rebels, marines, civilian command… They all have their own motivations, allies, and interests, but the text doesn't always lay them out clearly. I had to make my own tables, otherwise, I would have gotten lost.
Another thing: player freedom is a bit of an illusion. While the scenario suggests openness, some key scenes are tied strictly to specific locations and characters. If players decide to go a different way or bypass something, the whole thing can stop making sense, and I had to improvise a lot.
The xenomorph appears later—which is fine for tension, but it can also feel unbalanced. The first act is more about military action and investigation, while the second and third shift into survival horror. If players go into "Rambo" mode too early, the atmosphere of fear easily falls apart.
Technically, I missed some practical tools: character lists in one place, a timeline of events, and connections between locations and information. Furthermore, some maps don't match the descriptions in the scenario—luckily, I managed to adjust on the fly, but a beginner might struggle.
Destroyer of Worlds is an excellent scenario—tense, dense, and atmospheric. But it's not an easy ride. It requires a lot of preparation and the ability to improvise. If you have a group that isn't afraid of tough decisions, internal conflicts, and Aliens-style horror, it will be worth it. Just don't count on the scenario to hold your hand through everything—you'll have to keep track of a lot of things yourself.
Stres, nedůvěra, nejistota – to všechno tu funguje bezvadně.
Struktura ve třech aktech pomáhá udržet tempo a dávkovat informace. Každý akt posune napětí o kousek dál, až to celé vybuchne. Agendy jednotlivých postav (včetně osobních zájmů, tajemství a záměrů) vytvářejí konflikty uvnitř skupiny, což Alien RPG podporuje.
Hodně oceňuji i grafické zpracování – mapa kolonie, atmosférické ilustrace, předpřipravené postavy. To všechno pomáhá GMovi i hráčům se do hry ponořit.
Vést tenhle scénář není jednoduché. Má opravdu hodně postav, lokací a frakcí – UPP, Company, rebely, mariňáky, civilní velení…
Destroyer of Worlds je výborný scénář – napínavý, hutný, atmosférický. Ale není to jednoduchá jízda. Vyžaduje hodně přípravy a schopnost improvizace.
