Sandman: The reading order for the Lord of Dreams comics
What is the right order to read Sandman? Start with the volume Preludes & Nocturnes and follow the numbers all the way to the tenth, The Wake. These ten volumes make up Neil Gaiman's complete story about the Lord of Dreams. Save Overture, Endless Nights, and The Dream Hunters for last, even though one of them is a prequel.

The main arc: what is essential
The backbone of Sandman consists of volumes 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 10. Without them, the story makes no sense. Gaiman explores a single grand question: can a being as old as the universe change, or will its own rules destroy it?
Watch out for A Game of You. At first glance, it looks like a standalone side story about a woman's dream world. However, it introduces Thessaly, a character who returns when it matters most. If you skip the fifth volume, you'll miss half the context in The Kindly Ones.
You can find the entire series in the Sandman – comic series category.
Short story volumes: to skip or not to skip
Gaiman inserts collections of short stories between the main narrative arcs. Theoretically, you can skip them on your first read. Practically, they contain fragments that the main story returns to.
- Dream Country (3) contains four standalone stories. A Midsummer Night's Dream, in which Shakespeare performs for actual faeries, won the World Fantasy Award in 1991. Don't skip it; it's short and among the best Gaiman has written.
- Fables & Reflections (6) was published in two parts. You can read most of these stories anytime. However, read the story of Orpheus, Morpheus's son, before Brief Lives, otherwise you won't understand why the seventh volume is so painful.
- Worlds' End (8) is the easiest to skip. Travelers at an inn tell stories while the main plot stands still. However, the end of the volume shows an image that only makes sense in The Wake.
Our advice: don't skip anything. But if you're short on time, skip Worlds' End first.
After the main saga: Overture, Endless Nights, and The Dream Hunters
Overture was published between 2013–2015 and tells what happened just before the first volume. Even so, read it only after The Wake. Gaiman wrote it for readers who already know the world of Sandman, and you won't appreciate many of its moments without knowing the saga.
Endless Nights brings seven stories, each about one of the Endless: Dream, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction, and Destiny. It works well as an add-on after the main saga. The Dream Hunters is a standalone fairy tale about a monk and a magical fox in old Japan, illustrated by P. Craig Russell. You can read it anytime after the first few volumes.
Where to start if…
- You only know the Netflix series: start with volume 1. The series shortens and changes a lot; the comic is deeper and darker.
- You just want a taste: grab Dream Country. Four standalone stories will show you Gaiman's style without committing to the whole series.
- You like horror: the first two volumes are the darkest of the entire series. Be warned, some scenes are intense.
- You want the whole collection: volumes 1 through 10, then Overture, Endless Nights, and The Dream Hunters. You can find other Gaiman books on the Neil Gaiman page.
We don't currently carry spin-offs like Death, Lucifer, or the Sandman Universe series. You don't need them to understand the main saga.
One final clarification: DC's Sandman existed before Gaiman. The detective Wesley Dodds with the gas mask is a different character and has nothing to do with the Lord of Dreams.
Series vs. Comic
Netflix produced two seasons of Sandman. The first (2022) adapts volumes 1 and 2 and part of Dream Country. The second and final season (2025) is based on Season of Mists, Brief Lives, The Kindly Ones, and The Wake. Seven volumes were packed into twelve episodes, so the series cuts and changes a lot. We analyzed how the first season turned out in our review.
