Description
The wargame Red Winter: The Soviet Attack at Tolvajärvi, Finland: 8-12 December 1939 takes place when the Soviet Union declares war on Finland. Soviet bombers rain destruction on the Finnish capital, Helsinki, and in the ensuing David vs. Goliath struggle, Soviet forces rack up one victory after another. The future of Finnish independence looks bleak, but new Finnish commander Paavo Talvela decides to stand against the Russians at Lake Tolvajärvi. Over the next five days, the Finns not only miraculously repel the Red Army's attack but also launch a successful counterattack.
Red Winter is a wargame for one to two players that maps the unusual battle of Tolvajärvi, using proven game mechanics alongside new ones. Players command Finnish ski infantry, Russian machine-gun units, artillery, tanks, and anti-tank weapons. Expect long-range combat, Finnish night attacks, losses and attrition caused by sub-zero temperatures, and much more. You can play the entire campaign in a single evening.
