How to spot fake Pokémon cards

Counterfeits are everywhere. Marketplaces, bazaars, "bargain" packs from shady shops. We get why you're hesitant, especially when buying for your kid or picking out your first booster.

What is a fake and why it matters

Fake card, counterfeit, knock-off — call it what you want. Why don't you want one?

You can't use it in tournaments. Official events require original cards.
It has no collector value. Nobody wants to trade or buy a fake.
Disappointment. A cheap pack looks like a win until you see real cards for the first time.

Collecting Pokémon is a passion and a community. A fake ruins that joy.

How to spot an original card

You don't need to be an expert. Just a few tricks.

Look and feel. Fakes often feel different in your hand. Colors are usually off, especially on the back. Corners might be softer or worn out immediately.
The flashlight trick. Turn on your phone's flashlight. Hold it against the card. Does the light shine through? It's likely a fake. With an original, you'll only see a thin strip of light around the edges; with many fakes, the whole surface glows.
Stats and content. A Pokémon card doesn't normally have thousands of HP. You won't pull three "ultra-rare" cards in one booster. A suspiciously cheap booster box is another red flag.
Where you buy. Unknown seller with no reviews, a marketplace with no guarantees, and a price below market value? Better back away.

What

The fastest way is the light test: shine a flashlight on the back of the card. An original has a dark layer inside and light barely passes through; a fake usually glows. Then check the colors, corners, and numbers on the card. Nonsensical HP or spelling errors give a fake away immediately.

Can I play with fake cards in a tournament?

You can't. Official events and tournaments only allow original cards, and fakes won't pass inspection. If you want to play in the community or at tournaments, it pays to buy cards from official distribution from the start.

Do fake Pokémon cards have any collector value?

They don't. You can't sell a fake as an original, and nobody will take it for a collection or grading. A cheap fake card ends up costing you more than an original in the long run.

How do I spot a fake booster if I can

Check the packaging: blurry printing, text errors, and a suspiciously low price are warning signs. After opening, you'll know by the contents. If you pull three rare cards from one booster, it's almost certain it's not an original.
