Maté

 /  products

A traditional drink of the Paraguayan Indians made from the leaves and twigs of the yerba mate plant. The infusion is highly energizing and features a pleasant, slightly bitter taste with a smoky aroma. Traditionally, you drink it using a bamboo or metal straw with a filter called a bombilla, and the mate itself is steeped multiple times in a calabash. Maté has a unique aroma. Some people love it immediately, while others need time to appreciate its beauty (much like olives or red wine).

How to prepare maté?

Generally, it is not a good idea to pour boiling water over maté. After boiling the water, let it sit for a moment, then pour it into the calabash along the bombilla. This cools the water down slightly. Then, pour 0.5l of water over roughly 10-15g of maté. Calabashes vary in size, so experimenting with the ratio of maté to water is the key to a drink that both energizes you and tastes great.

Maté is sold both pure without additives and lightly flavored or scented. Perhaps the most famous blend is Maté Karneval. You can enjoy maté as it is, or combine it with sugar, caramel, or even condensed milk.
