Description
It was an empire of shifting flags. The old king fell, and suddenly, a host of successors emerged. This happened two centuries ago. Barons and princes now pledge their loyalty to whichever usurper happens to have the largest army nearby. Clerics sell indulgences to the highest bidder, and spies whisper promises to mercenary generals.
In the historical board game Lyssan, you are the only true ruler of the Lyssan Empire, and it is up to you to drive the remaining claimants to the throne back to their homes before their endless disputes tear your nation apart. You, along with the others, strive to seize control of the empire using castles, knights, nobility, the church, and spies as follows:
- Knights defend territory and are supreme in combat
- Nobility hold territory and support the church, but are weak in combat
- Castles defend territory, produce new units, and protect knights and nobility
- The Church and its priests manipulate influence and support spies
- Spies assassinate priests and other spies, and possess the devastating power to steal cards from other players' hands
Lyssan is an intense board game strategy that blends strategic thinking with cooperation and betrayal, for two to four players. The winner is the player who manages to collect the most trophies, and each trophy can only be claimed by one player, not an alliance. One trophy is earned by controlling the majority of mines, another for having the most active spies, and another for a well-planned court. One trophy appears each turn, and you must use all your strength, cunning, and adaptability to the situation to claim it. Only then will you become the King of Lyssan!

The game's atmosphere strongly evokes an unlicensed take on the political and military conflicts of Westeros from Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.
Four major houses (player factions) enter the game, along with about a dozen minor houses that lend their strength to the main sides depending on luck and influence.
The game relies on a limited luck factor, represented by randomly drawn action and permanent upgrade cards; everything else depends solely on player tactics and the ability to negotiate cooperation with others.
The game's craftsmanship is high-quality, albeit low-budget; the only fancy components are the plastic strongholds, while everything else is paper-based.
The only weakness is the somewhat hard-to-distinguish cardboard token figures. While they feature an atmospherically appropriate heraldic color code, it unfortunately feels confusing and difficult to read in practice.
We've played one game with two players so far and really enjoyed it. The amount of text on the cards is minimal, so even those with weaker English won't drown (or it's easy to create a cheat sheet with a card overview). We definitely recommend the game.
