Architect of Adventure: Who was Jennell Jaquays?

Jennell Jaquays was an American game designer, illustrator, and author who left an indelible mark on the history of tabletop RPGs and video games. From her active involvement in the burgeoning industry in the mid-70s until her passing in 2024, her work consistently pushed the boundaries of design and storytelling. She was not just an artist, but a pioneer whose style influenced generations of creators.

Dungeons that tell stories

One of Jennell Jaquays' most significant contributions is her innovative approach to dungeon design, now known as "Jaquaysing the Dungeon." Instead of linear corridors and rooms, she created intertwined, non-linear labyrinths with multiple entrances, verticality, and interconnected locations that gave players a sense of true discovery. This design style puts players at the center of the action and encourages complex interactions and decision-making.

Her most famous TTRPG works include:

  • Dark Tower (1980): A legendary Dungeons & Dragons module still considered one of the best ever published outside of TSR/Wizards of the Coast. It is frequently praised for its non-linear exploration and "non-static" events.
  • The Caverns of Thracia (1979): Another cult classic dungeon that set the bar for detailed environments, factions, and complex mapping.
  • Griffin Mountain (1981): Co-author and illustrator for RuneQuest, a campaign considered a masterpiece of early gaming.
  • FR5 The Savage Frontier (1988): A Forgotten Realms module she contributed to as an author and cartographer.

Visual and digital legacy

Jennell Jaquays was not just a designer of rules and adventures, but also a talented illustrator whose art graced the pages of magazines like Dragon and the covers of modules like Dragon Mountain. Her influence extended into the world of video games, where she worked on iconic titles:

  • Coleco (conversions of games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong)
  • id Software (Quake II, Quake III Arena)
  • Ensemble Studios (Age of Empires III, Halo Wars)

Her contributions were recognized with an induction into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design's Hall of Fame in 2017 and a posthumous Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award in 2024 for her significant impact on sci-fi and fantasy. Jennell Jaquays was also an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
