I found this one much harder than the first part. There are few ways to win, so you have to explore many different options before finding the right path. It took me eight attempts to beat it. On the other hand, I find this part more interesting in terms of story and characters.
What more to say? A legendary old-school gamebook in a beautiful hardcover. The magic of these gamebooks lies in drawing your own map and taking notes as your hero progresses through the story, so it's better not to peek at the map in the back. Even though my first map didn't turn out perfectly! 😀
Co dodat? Legendarny oldschool gamebook v nadhernej pevnej vazbe.
Another, and most importantly, a new installment in the Fighting Fantasy series that has never been published in Czech before!
Hardcover, beautiful illustrations, and a great story that takes us back to Firetop Mountain.
I was really looking forward to this one, and it lived up to my expectations. Highly recommended to everyone.
Back in the day, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain felt incredibly generic and annoying to me. It’s just classic sword and sorcery with all the trimmings. And a dungeon to boot (like most Fighting Fantasy books).
The new binding is really nice, I liked the cover art, and the interior has likely been tweaked as well, though you barely notice it. Sometimes the translation didn't quite sit right with me (some phrases sound good in English, but not in Czech). What I really welcomed was the fabric bookmark. I’ll probably never get over the fact that 'stamina' is now 'kondice' (fitness), even though it’s a more accurate translation :D Nostalgia is a cruel mistress, after all.
Getting back to the book's content. The maze is the centerpiece of the story. It’s actually very primitive, BUT it takes the player a long time to navigate it. Fortunately, there are no traps or outright unfair tricks waiting for the player, which I appreciated. If you use the map included with this book, you’ll lose the entire experience of the maze. However, it serves very well for checking your own sketches.
Combat mechanics are a pain, of course. I played it honestly, but I might come up with a faster combat system for my next playthrough. But hey, it’s 40 years old, what do you expect?
For 350 CZK, it’s a sea of fun, and I’m already eyeing the next installments.
Svého času mi Čaroděj z Ohňové hory přišel hrozně obyčejný a otravný.
