The project is brought to you by Holmgard Games, directly continuing the legacy of Joe Dever. In addition to the base game, the campaign offers exclusive rewards for backers.

If you're a fan of the series or looking for a strong narrative game for two, this is the perfect opportunity to be part of the project from the start – and help the rebirth of the Magnamund legend.

A little bit about the world of Lone Wolf

The world of Magnamund first came to life in 1984 with the release of the first book in the Lone Wolf gamebook series by British author Joe Dever. Players became the last member of the Kai Order, embarking on dangerous missions where they chose their own path, fought using dice, and developed their character's skills. The series spans dozens of books divided into several cycles (Kai, Magnakai, Grand Master…) and remains a milestone in the interactive literature genre to this day. Joe Dever built a whole community of fans around him who developed a deep connection to his world.

And it is this love that gave birth to the new board game.

Vengeance of the Kai - asymmetric strategy

Lone Wolf: Vengeance of the Kai is an asymmetric strategy game for two players set in the period after the destruction of the Kai Order. One player takes on the role of the Darklords of Helgedad, while the other leads the remnants of the Free Lands and their last hope – the lone hero known as Lone Wolf. The game reimagines the events of the first twelve books of the series as an epic clash where each side has its own goals, resources, and playstyle.

The Darklords start the game with a larger army, greater resources, and the goal of conquering key cities across Magnamund. If they manage to control 5 out of 9 strategic territories, they win. In contrast, the Freeland Alliance plays a game of time, needing to hold their positions long enough for Lone Wolf to complete 5 crucial quests – from finding the legendary Sommerswerd sword to the final destruction of Helgedad. If neither side manages to complete their main objective within 6 rounds, the total number of victory points decides the winner.

Game rounds are divided into 3 phases – Action, Quest, and Refresh. In the Action phase, players take turns activating their leaders and using cards to influence the battlefield, cast spells, or send units into attack. Each leader has different abilities, and using a card costs not only resources but also a valuable turn. Sometimes it is better to defend, other times to launch a risky counterattack. During the Quest phase, Lone Wolf can face challenges – usually in the form of duels with powerful enemies, influenced not only by his equipment but also by the help of allies. And in the Refresh phase, preparation for the next round begins – recruiting reinforcements, building units, or drawing cards.

What makes Vengeance of the Kai exceptional is its strong asymmetry. Each side plays completely differently, with different dynamics and pacing. The Darklords lead with an aggressive style, while the Freeland Alliance fights for survival and strives to make clever use of limited resources. The result is a game full of tension, where even a small decision from the first round can come back to haunt you in the sixth. Thanks to variable leaders, different unit deployments, and various cards, no two games are ever the same.

Lone Wolf board game heads to Gamefound

For Lone Wolf fans, this game is a dream come true – a chance to dive back into a familiar world, this time with full tactical depth and against a live opponent. For new players, it offers an intense strategic experience that remains accessible and understandable without requiring knowledge of the original series.

Whichever side you choose, one thing is certain – a journey full of fateful decisions, sacrifices, and epic moments you won't soon forget awaits you.
