Introducing The One Ring RPG
Dive into the world of Middle-earth with The One Ring RPG. Explore, fight, and experience epic adventures inspired by Tolkien's work!
What do you find in the article?
The One Ring is a tabletop roleplaying game set in the Middle-earth created by J. R. R. Tolkien. The second edition of this game, published in Czech by Mytago, lets you dive into a rich, detailed setting during the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The game faithfully captures the atmosphere and details of Tolkien's work. The illustrations, descriptions, and overall design make you feel like you are truly in Middle-earth. You can explore familiar locations, meet iconic races like Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, or Men, and live out your own adventures.
Game Mechanics
The rules are designed to support storytelling and smooth gameplay. The system relies on three core attributes: Strength, Heart, and Wits, to which 18 skills are assigned. This simple yet effective system lets you grasp the rules quickly while providing plenty of room for strategy and tactics.
Key elements of the game are the Hope and Shadow mechanics. Hope represents your character's inner strength to overcome obstacles and can be used to gain an advantage in critical moments. Shadow symbolizes the dark influences and temptations heroes face. Accumulating Shadow points can lead to negative consequences, such as losing control or a character's moral downfall. This dynamic adds emotional depth and forces you to carefully weigh every decision.

The game's setting between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings invites you to embark on something grand and set out to save Middle-earth on your own. You know Bilbo is sitting in the Shire playing with the Ring… However, as the creators themselves remind us, not everyone is automatically part of the great tale.
Try to imagine individuals whose horizon often ends just a few miles beyond their home village. For every representative of the Wise and Great, there are countless others like Samwise Gamgee: simple folk who never ventured far from their own backyards. For every wizard, there are those like Gimli, son of Glóin, who only learned of Rohan when he visited it. For every Elven lord, there are women like the noble Éowyn, who had never seen an Elf or a Hobbit before the War of the Ring broke out.
Dice System
The One Ring uses a special dice system that adds atmosphere and tension. The game uses two twelve-sided dice, known as Feat Dice, and six-sided dice called Success Dice. Besides numbers, the Feat Dice feature special symbols – the Gandalf rune represents an automatic success, and the Eye of Sauron can mean failure or a complication. Success Dice may feature the Tengwa symbol (the Elven numeral 1), which indicates a higher degree of success or a special effect.

This system allows dice rolls to have not just numerical value, but narrative significance. This makes situations in the game more dynamic and full of surprises, supporting storytelling and tense moments. Using special dice also contributes to the feeling that you are truly part of the Middle-earth world. During play, you will encounter situations that add or subtract dice from your pool.
Combat System
Combat in The One Ring is fast, dangerous, and thrilling. The piercing blow mechanic means a single strike can decide a fight, adding real tension to conflicts. Players can choose different combat stances. There are three close-combat stances (Forward, Open, and Defensive) and one ranged stance (Rearward). These affect your chances to hit and defend, adding a strategic element and allowing you to tailor your combat style to your character.
Travel and Journeys
Travel is a key part of the game, reflecting the importance of journeys in Middle-earth. Using the Journey system, players plan their route together and assign roles such as Guide, Hunter, Scout, or Lookout. Various events and complications can occur during the trip, testing the characters' abilities and affecting their condition, such as fatigue or encounters with enemies. This system emphasizes the significance of adventure and the dangers of the road.
Character Creation
The character creation process is intuitive and focused on building deeply developed characters. Instead of traditional races and classes, you choose a Culture and a Calling, which better fits the reality of Middle-earth.

Available cultures include, for example:
- Hobbits of the Shire: Brave and resilient, with a love for home and simple pleasures.
- Elves of Lindon: Noble and wise, with a strong connection to nature and history.
- Dwarves of Durin's Folk: Master craftsmen and warriors, known for their toughness.
- Bardings: Diverse and adaptable, representing the common men and women of Middle-earth.
Callings determine a character's motivation and focus:
- Captain: A leader and strategist capable of inspiring others.
- Champion: A skilled warrior focused on fighting enemies.
- Messenger: A fast and agile scout who delivers news and information.
- Scholar: A wise individual with deep knowledge of history and lore.
- Treasure Hunter: An adventurer seeking lost artifacts and secrets.
- Warden: A protector of the innocent and a fighter against dark forces.
This combination of culture and calling lets you create unique characters with their own stories and motivations.
The game places a strong emphasis on roleplaying and character development. The Shadow and Hope mechanics create space for moral dilemmas and personal conflicts. You may find yourself in situations where you must choose between an easy path with dark consequences and a more difficult, but morally right, choice. These moments add depth and make the story memorable.
The One Ring RPG: Starter Set
In addition to the core rulebook, Mytago has prepared a beautifully crafted Starter Set. The The One Ring starter set contains three booklets, a large double-sided map of the Shire and Eriador, eight pre-generated characters (seven Hobbits and one Dwarf), 30 gear cards, and six double-sided combat stance and journey cards. The set also includes a pack of special dice.

The Starter Set focuses on the Shire as an introductory and less dangerous environment for new and younger players. The rules are simplified and do not include some advanced mechanics like travel or character creation. The included adventures are relatively easy and less dangerous, which you might find insufficient as a more experienced player. However, everyone has to start somewhere. Overall, the starter set is perfect for beginners who want to enter the world of Middle-earth and learn the basics of The One Ring.
The starter set includes useful practical tools like the map, cards, and dice, which will enhance your "full" game as well.
