Warhammer 40,000 books – where to start?
The Warhammer universe offers many mysterious corners and a rich history that you can start exploring from practically anywhere. You can read the books in their publication order, chronologically based on when the events took place, or start at the very end and work your way back to the dawn of history. Only proven authors with immense talent and experience work on the official books, and thanks to a rigorous approval process, Warhammer 40,000 boasts a massive library of top-tier stories. If you want to dive into the best Warhammer has to offer, we have a few recommendations for you.
The Horus Heresy
The events surrounding the Horus Heresy take place around the year 30,000 in the Warhammer timeline and are among the most popular stories fans love. It is no coincidence that over sixty volumes have been released for the Horus Heresy alone. Starting with the first installment, Horus Rising, masterfully written by Dan Abnett, all the way to the latest seven-part series Siege of Terra, currently being released in English. Based on fan feedback, interest in this era is not fading, so we can certainly look forward to more titles set in the Horus Heresy era in the future.
Gaunt's Ghosts
A legendary series that begins with the book First and Only, this saga spans sixteen volumes in total. Many fans consider this series the best story Warhammer has to offer, and its inception influenced a large portion of later Black Library publications, which drew inspiration from Abnett's engaging style.
Eisenhorn
This three-part series from the Warhammer 40,000 universe follows the adventures of Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn, Gideon Ravenor, and their retinue. Inquisitors and their fates are among the most beloved characters in the Warhammer world. They possess great autonomy, allowing them to move freely without restriction, investigate mysteries, and serve the Imperium as they see fit. The very first volume, Xenos, throws you straight into the action and won't let you rest until you've finished it.
