Description

Is it a novel? Is it a gamebook? No! It's a solo RPG!

The Thousand Year Old Vampire manual is a role-playing game that takes you through centuries of vampiric existence—from the loss of your mortality and grave deeds to your inevitable ruin.

The book is in English. It is primarily designed for one player, but you can also play the adventure in a group. We recommend a ten-sided and a six-sided die for gameplay (though you can play without them).

In Thousand Year Old Vampire you chronicle the many centuries of a vampire’s existence, beginning with the loss of mortality and ending with inevitable destruction.

Prompt-driven play and simple resource tracking provide easy rules for exploring your character’s human failings, villainous acts, and surprising victories. Expect gut-churning decisions and irreconcilable acts.

The game mechanics are simple and intuitive. Play progresses semi-randomly through a book of Prompts which let you explore your vampire’s wants and needs, resolve problems, and chart the decline into senescence. Play can happen entirely within the character sheet or can become a journaling activity - both work equally well.

Vampires, for the purposes of this game, can mean nearly anything that is functionally immortal, doesn't like daylight, and preys on humans for sustenance. I like Montague Summers-type vampires myself, but this system is designed to be flexible.

All you need is the book or PDF, a d10 and d6 are recommended but optional. This is a solo game for you to play in lonely places wrapped in darkness, but can be played multiplayer if you like. Play can take from one to three hours, depending on how you go about things.

How reviews work?

Tomáš K.

I have limited experience with solo journaling RPGs, so I can't really compare, but overall I found TYOV quite intense and engaging. Naturally, it's a game that depends on the player—so the experience can vary dramatically—but the guiding questions the game asks are very narrative-driven.
Plus, the book itself is a work of art and is printed on high-quality paper, so it will withstand all that necessary flipping through.

If you don't want to write a real vampire diary (which is undoubtedly an interesting option), I recommend using a computer document to record your memories—there will be a lot of crossing out and rewriting (Excel proved very useful, given the need for structure).
