The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

An absolute must-have for every fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and his Middle-earth. It's playable for 1–4 players (you could technically play with expansions using only one core set, but you'd need to improvise with a threat tracker and any missing tokens). The game time often exceeds an hour, especially with more players, but that just means more fun. ;)

The game might seem complicated at first if you read the rules beforehand, but don't let that discourage you. It's divided into distinct phases. And yes, it's somewhat similar to Magic: The Gathering. It essentially has two relatively simple concepts: questing and locations + engagement (enemies "pounce" on you) and combat (where enemies attack first, followed by the player). I've seen cooperative concepts many times before, but here it's very well-balanced and executed. Sauron and his allies can be quite nasty, and the game certainly doesn't lose any difficulty or the need for tactics just because you aren't playing against another human. The cooperative style is ideal for couples (and believe me, this game is a hit with the ladies), the teamwork element is fantastic. Another new concept is the "staging area," a place where cards from the encounter deck—enemies, treacheries, and locations—are placed. From there, they just "threaten you from afar" and make completing the quest harder. It's a very interesting idea that adds a fresh mechanic to the game.

Another highlight is the beautiful artwork on the cards. I also highly appreciate that the game draws inspiration primarily from the books rather than the films. The quotes from the books (as flavor text) provide the perfect atmosphere, making you feel like you're truly in Middle-earth.

For me, it's a clear 5 stars. You'll fall in love with the game and won't stop at just the core set. ;)

Naprostý "must-have" pro všechny fanoušky J.R.R. Tolkiena a jeho Středozemě. Dá se hrát v 1 - 4 hráčích (Dala by se hrát s rozšířeními i s jedním core setem, jen by si člověk musel nějak vypomoct s počítadlem hrozby a případnými chybějícími tokeny) Délka hry je často delší než hodina, obzvláště ve více hráčích, ale o to více zábavy. ;)

Hra se zpočátku možná zdá složitá, pokud si například předem pročítáte pravidla. Ale nenechte se odradit. Hra je rozdělena na jednotlivé fáze. A ano, v něčem se podobá Magic: The Gathering. Má vlastně 2 relativně jednoduché koncepty: procházení questem a lokacemi + engagement (nepřátele se na vás "vrhnou") a boj (kdy útočí nejdřív nepřátelé a pak hráč) Koncept kooperativních jsem viděl už několikrát, ale tady je velmi vyváženě a dobře zpracovaný. Sauron a jeho spojenci umí být velmi nepříjemní a rozhodně hra neztrácí na náročnosti a nutnosti taktizovat tím, že proti vám nehraje hráč. Jinak kooperativní styl hry je ideální pro hry ve 2 v páru (a věřte, že tuhle hru si užije něžné pohlaví), prvek spolupráce je skvělý. Dalším novým konceptem je "stagging area", místo kam se pokládají karty z balíku nepřátel, zrad a lokací. Odtud vám jen "hrozí vzdálenou hrozbnou" a znesnadňují průchod questem. Nápad velmi zajímavý a přidává novou mechaniku do hry.

Další předností jsou nádherné kresby na kartičkách. Já dál hodnotím velmi kladně, že se hra inspirovala hlavně knihami a nikoliv filmem. Citáty z knihy (jako flavor texty) dodávají tu správnou atmosféru a hráč si připadá skutečně jako ve Středozemi.

Za mě je to jasných 5 hvězdiček, do hry se zamilujete a nezůstanete jen u základní sady. ;)

The game met my expectations, even though I've only had the chance to play solo so far. Easy-to-grasp mechanics, a thematically crafted fantasy world, and great card design.

The difficulty is higher than I expected. At least in single-player mode. The difficulty of individual scenarios also varies significantly.

The downside is that the base box contains few cards, resulting in a limited number of combinations; the game gets repetitive quickly without expansions.

Hra splnila moje očekávání, přestože jsem zatím měl možnost hrát pouze sólo. Snadno pochopitelná mechanika, tematicky zpracovaný fantasy svět, skvělý design karet.

Obtížnost je vyšší, než jsem čekal. Alespoň ve hře jednoho hráče. Také se výrazně liší obtížnost jednotlivých scénářů.

Nevýhodou je, že v základní krabici je málo karet a tedy omezené množství kombinací, hra se bez rozšíření rychle ohraje.

Beautiful card illustrations. I played a few solo games and a few two-player games. It’s not exactly my cup of tea. I’m an experienced card game player, but this system just didn't click with me. Also, the options with just one core set are very limited, which means there isn't much variability. However, if this system grabs your interest and you have the budget to expand the game, it could be a great experience. But if I’m only rating the core box, it didn't really impress me.

Krásná ilustrace karet. Odehrál jsem pár sólo her a pár her ve 2. Není to úplně můj šálek kávy. Jsem zkušený hráč karetních her, ale tento systém mi nějak nesedl. Zároveň možnosti s 1 základní sadou jsou velice omezené, a tím pádem není moc velká variabilita. Pokud ale člověka tento systém zaujme, a má peníze na to si hru rozšiřovat, potom by to mohl být skvělý zážitek. Pokud mám ale hodnotit jenom core box, moc mě neoslovil.

Rules: 80%; not exactly intuitive, but nothing terrible. A big plus is the cooperative principle, making it easier to teach new players and allowing for solo play. The balance between quest mechanics, traveling between locations, and combat is very well set and encourages cooperation; it's not easy to handle all three at once with a single deck. Game length increases with the number of players, but you'll almost always finish within 60 minutes.
Difficulty: 60%; the game's biggest weakness. It depends on the quest, which varies greatly in quality and complexity, though the ones in the core set aren't bad. The game is definitely not easy; winning usually requires a good deck, which demands card knowledge and strategy.
Verdict: The core set is a good investment if you plan to buy at least the Shadows of Mirkwood cycle, which gives you a decent card pool and 9 quests. If you only want the base set, it's better to get a different co-op board game or non-co-op card game, as both will offer more variety.

Zpracování: 100%; hlavně grafika (Magali Villeneuve <3).
Pravidla: 80%; nejsou intuitivní, ale nic hrozného. Velké + je kooperativní princip, takže lze snáze učit nové hráče a můžete hrát sami. Rovnováha mezi herními mechanismy plnění úkolů, putování po lokacích a soubojů je velmi dobře nastavená a motivuje ke kooperaci, s jedním balíkem není snadné zvládat všechny tři věci najednou. Délka hry roste s počtem hráčů, ale skoro vždy se do 60min vejdete.
Obtížnost: 60%; největší slabina hry. Závisí na plněném úkolu, které se hodně liší kvalitou i složitostí., ty v core setu ale nejsou špatné. Hra rozhodně není jednoduchá, na výhru je obvykle potřeba mít dobrý balík, což vyžaduje znalost karet a strategii.
Závěr: Core set je dobrou investicí, pokud si hodláte dokoupit alespoň cyklus Shadows of Mirkwood, čímž získáte slušný základ karet a 9 úkolů. Pokud chcete mít jen základní sadu, je lepší pořídit nějakou koop. deskovku nebo nekoop. karty, obojí nabídne větší variabilitu.

If you have a few grand to spare and plenty of time for endless attempts where the game kicks your ass every time you draw two bad cards in a row, then this is for you. It was fun for a moment, but then you get the feeling it's just too rigged against the player :(

Pokud máte pár tisíc bokem a spoustu času na nekonečné pokusy, kdy vám hra nakope řiť, kdykoliv za sebou dvakrát blbě přijde zlá karta, tak tohle je něco pro Vás. Bavilo jen chvilku, pak se vkrade pocit, že je to až moc udělané proti hráči :(

An excellent cooperative game for one or two players. You can play with up to four if you have two core sets. It’s an atmospheric game that breathes the world of The Lord of the Rings, complements the stories written by J.R.R. Tolkien, and is highly enjoyable even for a solo player. It made me reopen the books and reread the quotes on the cards in their Czech versions. The card sleeve size suitable for this card game is 63.5 x 88 mm.

Výborná kooperativní hra pro jednoho či dva hráče. Můžou hrát až 4, pokud mají dva základní balíky. Je to atmosférická hra, ze které dýchá svět Pána Prstenů, která doplňuje příběhy napsané J.R.R. Tolkienem a kterou si i samotný hráč velmi užije. Donutila mne znovu otevřít knihy a citáty na kartičkách si znovu přečíst i v české podobě. Velikost obalů vhodných pro tuto karetní hru je 63,5 x 88 mm.
