Maurice, a cat with a coat full of dandruff who knows exactly when and how to seize an opportunity, has set himself up with a great living. He has a dim-witted boy as a piper and his own rat plague—rats that are strangely intelligent. So educated, in fact, that Maurice can no longer think of them as "lunch."

Everyone knows the story of the rats and the piper—and so people paid them plenty of money. That is, until they try to pull their trick in a backwater town deep in Uberwald, where this perfectly prepared scam suddenly goes wrong. Someone here is playing a different tune. In the cellars, something very, very nasty is waiting… The rats must learn a new word. Evil.
