In the card game New Salem, you take on the roles of the founders of New Salem in the 17th century. You hope to find salvation from the plague-ridden streets of the infamous original Salem during the time of the witch trials.

You play your roles in secret—some are the so-called Righteous, others are witches. While the Righteous try to keep the witches in check and build specific types of structures, the witches spread the plague through the new town unnoticed.

If the Righteous manage to keep the plague to a minimum, the player with the most victory points wins. Otherwise, the witches win—specifically the one who was the most wicked of them all.
