Inferno is a strategy game inspired by Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, where you lead your family in an attempt to become the best minions of Hell. You achieve this by collecting cunning points. You earn these primarily by guiding sinners to their appropriate circles of Hell.

Players take turns clockwise until Dante triggers the end of the game. The game board consists of two parts: one displays all 9 circles of Hell and the soul index, while the other represents 14th-century Florence, where Dante lived, with its power struggles and palace intrigues.

Each turn consists of two phases:

• Hell Phase:
  You move a soul through Hell and gain cunning points if you successfully guide it to the appropriate circle. The space where the soul ends its movement also determines two possible actions in the next phase.
• Florence Phase (you must choose):
  Send a family member to a location in the city to perform an action associated with that location (such as adopting a street urchin, building a new floor for your family tower, or inviting a prominent figure to your home).

Accuse a sinner who is executed, and their soul is taken to Hell. Whenever a player accuses a sinner, Dante moves one step along his path. Each time Dante reaches a circle of Hell, the player currently furthest on the corresponding sinner scale gains a diploma and the opportunity to score that circle of Hell at the end of the game.

With the death of each subsequent sinner, Dante is one step closer to his goal. When he reaches the gate that leads him to Purgatory, the game ends.
