Description
"At its core, Giger's art delves into our psyche and touches our deepest instincts and fears. His art stands in a category of its own. The proof is the intensity of his work and imagination, which I can only compare to Hieronymus Bosch and Francis Bacon in their ability to provoke and disturb." - Ridley Scott
Swiss artist HR Giger (1940-2014) is best known for creating the space monster in Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror film Alien, for which he won an Oscar.
However, that was just one of the most popular manifestations of Giger's arsenal of biomechanical creatures, which consistently fused human-machine hybrids into images of haunting power and dark psychedelia. His visions drew from the demons of the past while evoking the mythologies of the future. Above all, they expressed the collective anxieties and fantasies of his time: the fear of the atom, of pollution and waste, and of a future where the survival of our bodies depends on machines.
This book presents the complete story of Giger's life and art, his sculptures, film designs, and iconic album covers, as well as the legacy he left behind in his own art museum and a bar he personally designed in the Swiss Alps.
