Description
Chasen is a tool used for the traditional preparation of Japanese powdered Matcha tea. This whisk is handcrafted using traditional methods from a single piece of bamboo, split at the end into countless thin tines. Simple yet perfectly effective, it will help you whisk every bowl of delicious tea into a rich foam.
Orthodox preparation requires specific tea accessories: a chasen whisk, a wide chawan bowl, a chashaku bamboo scoop, a chakin cloth, and a chaire tea caddy. Of course, you can replace everything with more accessible alternatives.
Preparation guide:
- Boil water and let it cool to 80°C
- Rinse the chawan bowl with hot water to warm it up
- Wipe the bowl dry with the chakin cloth
- Use the chashaku scoop to add Matcha to the bowl (two scoops, about 5g of tea)
- Pour in the prepared hot water (approx. 150 ml)
- Use the chasen whisk to stir the tea in a circular motion, starting slowly and then speeding up
- Switch from a circular motion to a back-and-forth motion from one side of the bowl to the other
- Continue until all lumps are dissolved and a consistent foam forms on the surface
- Now, just sit back, focus, and enjoy your delicious drink
Matcha is prepared in two ways: as a thick tea called koicha and a thin tea called usucha. The guide above applies to usucha (for koicha, you need to double the amount of tea).
