Chronological order of Star Wars movies and series

When George Lucas began planning the first installment of Star Wars in 1971, he was likely the only one who suspected it would be the start of something truly massive in pop culture. When the film Star Wars: A New Hope premiered in 1977, it ignited a global craze that continues to this day. Generations of fans have grown up with a lightsaber in hand, and the franchise's power shows no signs of fading, even if some feel it hasn't been the same since Disney acquired the brand.

Star Wars is now one of the highest-grossing franchises in the world. Pokémon leads the list with estimated earnings of over $100 billion, followed by Hello Kitty ($80–90 billion), Mickey Mouse & Friends ($80+ billion), and Winnie the Pooh (around $70 billion). Star Wars holds steady in fifth place with between $65 and $70 billion. They are followed by Mario (approx. $35–40 billion), the Marvel Cinematic Universe ($30+ billion), Harry Potter ($25 billion), and Batman (over $20 billion).

The world of Star Wars is vast. A massive pile of books, comics, movies, series, board games, and video games has been created. Who can keep track of it all? I’m not surprised that Disney, which bought Lucasfilm in October 2012 (the acquisition was worth $4.05 billion), took a proper axe to the official canon and discarded most of the side stories.

Even George Lucas himself didn't help make this universe any clearer. He added three prequel films to the original trilogy, while Disney added more films set afterward. In the meantime, the world expanded with additional series filling the gaps between the movies.

However, if you have the need and plenty of time to watch every piece of Star Wars audiovisual content in order, I offer you the Star Wars timeline. For each entry, you will find the release year and the Star Wars date in which the specific work takes place (BBY-ABY: Before the Battle of Yavin and After the Battle of Yavin). The overview also includes ratings from the Czech-Slovak Film Database (ČSFD) (dated March 2025, or September 2026 for newly added titles).

Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures (2023) (232 BBY)

An animated series for the youngest viewers set at the dawn of the High Republic era, two hundred years before The Phantom Menace – making it the earliest chapter in the entire timeline. It follows a group of young Jedi younglings, Kai Brightstar, Lys Solay, and Nubs, who learn the basics of the Force and Jedi values on the planet Tenoo under Master Yoda's guidance.

The Acolyte (2024) (132 BBY)

This series takes place at the end of the High Republic era and follows the journey of a young dark-side apprentice. The series focuses on the development of the dark side of the Force and how the Sith began manipulating the galaxy for their own benefit.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) (32 BBY)

The first episode of the saga follows young Anakin Skywalker, a slave with extraordinary sensitivity to the Force, who is discovered by Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The story involves political intrigue in the Galactic Senate, the rise of the dark Sith Lord Darth Sidious, and the fight for the freedom of the planet Naboo. Anakin becomes a key figure in the hope of resolving the conflict and a potential "Chosen One" meant to bring balance to the Force.

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) (22 BBY)

The second episode takes place ten years after the events of Episode I. The Republic is plagued by conflicts that lead to the outbreak of the Clone Wars. Anakin Skywalker falls in love with Padmé Amidala, while Obi-Wan Kenobi uncovers the secret of a clone army created for the Republic. Meanwhile, the dark side of the Force continues to grow, as does Anakin's sensitivity to it.

An animated film from the Star Wars world set during the Clone Wars (between Episodes II and III). All the main heroes from the previous films appear in the story. The film is followed by the animated series The Clone Wars, which expands on the original story.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) (22-19 BBY)

An animated series that delves deeper into the period of the Clone Wars between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The series follows Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, and other characters during battles and political intrigue. It also shows Anakin's gradual transition to the dark side and expands on the stories of the Jedi and the clones.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi (2022) (40-19 BBY)

An animated anthology series consisting of short stories about Jedi and Sith from different periods of the galaxy. Each episode offers a unique look at the development of key characters and events in the galaxy.

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005) (19 BBY)

The third episode tells the story of Anakin Skywalker's dramatic fall to the dark side of the Force under the influence of Darth Sidious. The Republic transforms into the Galactic Empire, the Jedi are nearly wiped out by Order 66, and Anakin becomes Darth Vader. The film marks the tragic end of the Jedi era and the beginning of the Empire.

This animated anthology series focuses on two characters: Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee. The series follows Morgan Elsbeth, a Dathomirian witch associated with Admiral Thrawn, during her early days and her later quest for revenge. The second story arc focuses on Barriss Offee, a former Jedi who becomes an Inquisitor after the fall of the Jedi Order and undergoes a process of recovery. The series offers a look at different eras of galactic history and explores the darker sides of the Empire.

Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld (2025) (approx. 19-16 BBY)

An anthology series expanding the Tales line with two legends of the galactic underworld – Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane. After a mysterious rebirth, Ventress searches for the Hidden Path and helps a young runaway Jedi, while the episodes about Cad Bane show his transformation from an outcast child into the ruthless bounty hunter fans know from later stories.

Star Wars: Maul – Lord of Shadows (2026) (18 BBY)

Less than a year after Revenge of the Sith, former Sith Lord Maul, having lost his power base, tries to rebuild his criminal syndicate and take revenge on those who stripped him of his influence. The series shows how the former Sith apprentice becomes one of the most dangerous players in the underworld of the rising Empire.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) (13-10 BBY)

The film tells the story of young Han Solo, his first meeting with Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, and his involvement in the galaxy's criminal underworld. It also shows the origin of the legendary ship Millennium Falcon and the charismatic smuggler Han Solo.

Set ten years after the events of Episode III, the series follows Obi-Wan Kenobi in exile on Tatooine, where he watches over young Luke Skywalker. When Princess Leia is kidnapped, Obi-Wan is forced to leave his hiding place and face his former apprentice, Darth Vader.
