The Void RPG trilogy is an extensive Czech tabletop role-playing game project created by Gediman. You can find the manuals on gediman.cz, but also right here at imago.cz. They are provided for free and are available for download in PDF format. The project's first product was the 2012 game Void: Sci-Fantasy, which was subsequently followed by eleven expansion manuals and several other materials (including a demo version).
In 2018, the variation Void: Fantasy was released, followed by Void: Sci-Fi in 2019, both as core rulebooks. In 2020, the second edition of all three core rulebooks was released, now titled Void: Science Fantasy, Void: Fantasy, and Void: Science Fiction. This was followed by a second edition of the demo version and the expansion manual Triskelion, which is compatible with all three variations. More manuals are in the works. The second edition brings better clarity, balanced rules, and improved overall playability. Development is now more flexible than before, allowing for more frequent updates based on player feedback.
Void RPG trilogy uses a system simply called "Void". It is a system based on rolling a twenty-sided die, where you must roll equal to or lower than a target number (a roll-under system). The target number is the character's attribute modified by bonuses and penalties. The trilogy emphasizes action, combat, and teamwork. You can play not only war stories but also spy and conspiracy thrillers, survival, and supernatural horror.
RPG players take on the roles of mercenaries (though additional manuals offer other options) who get hired for individual missions. Each mission has clearly defined objectives, and completing them brings earnings, experience, and prestige. If players and the gamemaster agree, they can also play a sandbox style, where characters set off on adventures of their own choosing. Unprepared characters can die quite easily, so proper gear and equipment, well-chosen skills, and mutual support are key.
Each game has its own "grimdark" world – a brutal environment full of war, conspiracy, and corruption. Void: Science Fantasy takes place in a galaxy of a completely fictional universe and, as the name suggests, combines elements of fantasy and sci-fi. Void: Fantasy is set in a world with fantastic cosmology, where the universe consists half of an ocean of liquid Aether and half of a sky of gaseous Aether. The influence of gods and magic is much greater here, while technology is backward.
Void: Science Fiction takes place in the distant future of "our" universe. Technology is highly advanced here; instead of gods, there are extradimensional beings, and instead of magic, there are psionic powers. These three worlds are parallel to each other, and history unfolds similarly in them. All three universes are under attack by the forces of Darkness, which wants to stifle their Light and bring about definitive destruction.
The Void RPG trilogy offers:
- three distinct grimdark worlds: choose according to your preferences
- a simple and fast-paced system that is quick to learn
- ruthless, deadly combat where you can use various tactics
- 18 playable races
- 7 character specializations ("classes")
- an interesting character creation system where past experiences play a role
- a multitude of items, some of which are specific to certain specializations
- cybernetic implants and talismans that significantly improve your character
- a wealth of special abilities, both general and specialization-specific
- many, many weapons that can be modified in various ways to create interesting variations
- animals, including mounts, and rules for taming wild beasts
- various means of transport: vehicles, aircraft, watercraft, space (or rather, aetheric) ships that can be customized as you like… the possibilities are truly vast
- various enemies: from soldiers of all races to supernatural beings and monstrous beasts and servants of Darkness
- effects of faith and prayer (in Void: Science Fiction, this is replaced by synchronization and interlinking): characters have a chance to achieve an afterlife
- effects of corruption: characters risk falling completely to the Darkness
- a simple mission generator for the gamemaster to use
Everyone can enjoy the adventures of Void for free.
