The journey of Tanjiró and Nezuko from the first manga volumes through the phenomenal anime to the emotional and action-packed Infinity Castle film trilogy.

When the first chapter of Demon Slayer—originally Kimetsu no Yaiba—appeared in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2016, few suspected that this unassuming story about a boy with a wooden box on his back would become a global phenomenon. The author is Koyoharu Gotouge, a mysterious figure about whom very little is known—they have never made a public appearance, hide their identity, and communicate only through the publisher, Shueisha. Perhaps this adds to the legend surrounding the series, which has captivated hundreds of millions of readers. Go ahead and try to Google their name—you won't find a single photo.
The protagonist, Tanjiró Kamado, comes from a simple family of charcoal burners. When he returns home from the mountains one day, he discovers that demons have attacked his family—and only his sister Nezuko survived, though she has been turned into a demon herself. Instead of killing her, he decides to save her. Thus begins a journey that leads him to the secret Demon Slayer Corps, an organization dedicated to protecting humanity from demons. The series brilliantly blends action, emotion, and mythology—demons here aren't just monsters, but tragic beings with remnants of their humanity.
The Manga That Moved the World
Gotouge's art isn't classically perfect—at first glance, it seems simple, but it is precisely this raw visual style that perfectly conveys the tension and pain of the characters. The manga Demon Slayer was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump until 2020, spanning a total of 23 volumes. By the time it concluded, it had over 220 million copies in circulation, ranking it among the best-selling series of all time—right behind One Piece and Naruto.

Interestingly, Demon Slayer became a cultural phenomenon even outside the anime fan base. In Japan, it influenced fashion, music, and tourism—some regions where the story takes place (such as mountain villages in Kumamoto Prefecture) became pilgrimage sites for fans. The series has literally become a national symbol of modern pop culture.
Demon Slayer is also very popular here. Surprisingly, among children. Even though the story is quite brutal. Of course, I don't believe such young readers are actually reading it, but the look of the main characters (especially Nezuko with the wooden gag in her mouth) really resonates with them.
The Czech translation of the manga—Demon Slayer—was handled by the CREW publishing house.
Anime That Set a New Bar
In 2019, the legendary studio Ufotable took over the story, known for their precise animation and mastery of light. Their adaptation brought the world of demons to screens with breathtaking visuals and fluidity that critics described as "living paintings in motion." The first season had 26 episodes and immediately sparked a frenzy that crossed the borders of Asia.
The film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) followed, directly continuing from the end of the first season. It became the highest-grossing anime film of all time, even surpassing the legendary Spirited Away. The film also achieved massive success thanks to the opening song "Homura" by singer LiSA, which topped the Japanese charts.
Subsequent seasons—Entertainment District Arc (2021), Swordsmith Village Arc (2023), and Hashira Training Arc (2024)—continued the story while expanding the world with new techniques, demons, and unforgettable characters. Each episode became an event accompanied by concerts, exhibitions, and official collaborations with companies ranging from Uniqlo to Nissin Cup Noodles, resulting in a whole range of licensed merchandise.
Infinity Castle – The Finale Shaking Cinemas
The year 2025 brought the culmination of the entire saga—the Infinity Castle film trilogy, adapting the final part of the manga. Instead of continuing in a series format, the creators opted for three epic films. The first premiered in the summer of 2025 and immediately shattered attendance records.
The plot takes place in an infinitely shifting castle, where the Demon Slayer Corps face the main demon Muzan Kibutsuji and his elite servants. Every fight is crafted down to the last detail—the choreography, emotions, music, and lighting effects form a cohesive whole that feels more like an opera than an action movie.
Interestingly, each film in the trilogy is set to have a different director from Ufotable, ensuring each part feels unique. The visual style of Infinity Castle draws from traditional Japanese architecture combined with nocturnal expressionism—the result is a space that constantly reshapes itself and feels almost hypnotic.
Critics primarily praise the emotional power of the finale and the symbolism rooted in traditional Japanese values—devotion, honor, and humility. Conversely, some point out that the film is so packed with emotion that it's hard to keep track during the first viewing. But one thing is certain: Infinity Castle concludes an era that will go down in anime history.
Why Demon Slayer Still Works Today
Demon Slayer isn't just about fighting demons. It's about family, guilt, hope, and the fact that light can exist even in darkness. Every character has their own story, past, and reason for fighting. This is why the series maintains such huge popularity even years later—whether readers are picking up the first volume of the manga or watching the latest film.
