What is LARP and why has it become a phenomenon?
LARP stands for Live Action Role Play. It is a cross between a game, a sport, and immersive theater. Unlike video games or board games, you don't control a character on a screen or a piece on a board – you are the character. In the Czech Republic, LARP has a deep tradition that evolved from the tramping movement and historical fencing into a modern form that now includes everything from educational games to mass battles for thousands of players.
You can find most LARP events in the imago calendar.
The main pillars of the LARP experience:
- Immersion: The goal is to "step out of reality" and live someone else's life for a few hours or days.
- Interactivity: Every decision you make changes the story. There is no pre-written script you have to follow.
- Community: LARP is a social network in the real world. It connects people across professions and ages.
Detailed typology: Which LARP is right for you?
Choosing your first LARP is crucial for your future relationship with this hobby. According to the expert study The Nordic Larp Wiki and the methodology of the Czech portal Larp.cz, we can divide games as follows:
1. Battles (so-called "Dřevárny")
These focus on athletic performance and combat simulation.
- Characteristics: Hundreds of players divided into armies, castle sieges, and strategic tasks.
- Equipment: A safe foam weapon and a basic costume (tunic, gambeson) are a must.
- For whom: For lovers of adrenaline, movement, and teamwork.
Helmáč is definitely a cult Czech battle LARP. Other popular events of this type include Bitva pod horou inspired by The Hobbit, or the Heroes-style battle organized by the well-known LARP organizer Ivo „Bonhart“ Nepeřil.

2. Worlds and Living Fantasy
The emphasis is on living in the game world. Combat is just one of many activities.
- Characteristics: Players cook over a fire, trade in game currency, and deal with politics or crafts.
- Equipment: A complex costume including accessories like pouches, dining sets, and tents.
- For whom: For those who want to take a break from modern technology (digital detox).
Undoubtedly, the best-known and oldest LARPs in the Living Fantasy section are Zlenice and Díra. Events from the Witcher world are also popular, such as Čas osudu: Tanec se smrtí.

3. Chamber LARPs
Games taking place in 1 or 2 rooms, focused on dialogue and emotions. Due to their low demands on time and equipment, they are an ideal event for newcomers who want to try LARP.
- Characteristics: They last 2–4 hours, and characters have detailed backstories and relationships.
- Equipment: Often civilian clothing or simple accessories matching the era (e.g., 1930s, sci-fi).
- For whom: For fans of psychology, history, theater, and deep stories.
You can play chamber LARPs at GameCon – a festival of non-computer games. There are local associations and clubs like Crex in Ostrava that also focus on chamber LARPs. If you want to try playing a chamber LARP with friends, you can find freely available LARP scenarios on Larp.cz.
4. Post-apo and Sci-fi LARPs
Inspired by worlds like Fallout, Mad Max, or Cyberpunk.
- Characteristics: Played in abandoned factories or military areas.
- Equipment: "Aged" clothing, airsoft guns (often modified), and electronic gadgets.
Popular post-apo events definitely include Asteroid and Fallout LARP The Fulcrum.

Is it a LARP or a con?
Outside of standard categories, we shouldn't forget to mention the hybrid between a LARP and a con, which has more of a festival character and represents a phenomenon of the last 10 years (in the Czech Republic). Specifically, we mean events like the Witcher-themed Con Morhen.

These events grew out of the LARP community but added a bit more commerce and festival production (lectures, theater, concerts, food and merch stalls), so the classic definition of LARP simply doesn't cover them anymore.
While a traditional LARP (e.g., Díra) requires constant interaction and for you to create the game yourself, these hybrid events function more like an "amusement park" in a given universe. They create the perfect backdrop, music, and food, and it's up to you how much you engage in the LARP storylines or participate just as a spectator.

Can I play LARP with kids?
Although most events are for ages 15 or 18+ for safety and thematic reasons, there are thematic LARP camps and weekend events for children under 15. Many associations organize such events; we highly recommend the great group of organizers called RPGpříběhy, who host quite a few of these events per year. Another way to involve children in roleplaying is through family LARPs like Ovčina, an event with a long tradition suitable for players of any age.

Non-fiction journalism 20. 3. 2025 Jakub Šenkeřík, Kryštof Halfar 9 min- Footwear: The most important part. It must be sturdy, preferably leather and broken-in. For starters, brown or black outdoor boots with camouflaged lacing are enough.
- Costume: The foundation is a base tunic or shirt and trousers in natural colors. Ladies can get a medieval-style dress or a skirt with a tunic. Avoid synthetic materials, which look out of place in the game and even in photos.
- Weapon: If you are preparing for a battle, we recommend proven foam weapons, which are safe and look realistic.
Tips from our imago workshop
"When manufacturing in our leather workshop, we ensure that leather accessories are not only beautiful but also functional. We recommend beginners invest in a leather belt and pouch first. They are universal pieces you will use at 90% of events," advises our editor-in-chief and LARP veteran.
How to prepare for your first LARP event
- LARP community: Get involved and ask for advice on choosing an event. In the Czech Republic, there are FB groups like Larp CZ/SK or Larpové tržiště, where you can also buy second-hand gear.
- Registration: Find an event in the calendar and register.
- Rules: Every game has its own combat and magic rules. Not knowing them ruins the game for others.
- Role: Think carefully about who you want to be. Don't start with the role of a king or the main villain – the role of an "ordinary soldier" or "apprentice" offers much more room for experimentation.
- Logistics: Don't forget a sleeping bag, plenty of water, and spare dry clothes (it gets cold in the woods even in summer).
Safety and ethics: Player's Code
LARP is based on mutual trust. To ensure a positive experience for everyone, a few rules apply:
- Weapon safety: Weapons must not have sharp edges or a hard core on the surface. Each event usually clearly specifies what type of weapons and armor are permissible.
- "Stop" rule: If anyone feels in danger or uncomfortable with the game, they shout "STOP," and the game is immediately interrupted.
- Fair-play: There is no winner in LARP in the classic sense. The goal is to create the best possible story for everyone.
