The novel The Road takes place in a world scorched by an unknown catastrophe. A father and his son travel through a grey, wintry landscape, terrified of any sign that they aren't the only survivors; they certainly can't expect anything good from the last remaining people. The pair is kept alive only by what they can carry in their shopping cart and what they occasionally find in empty houses. Their goal is the coast, but even there, it becomes clear that hope no longer exists. Or does it?
