Tales from the Loop RPG: Starter Set

Like all other starter sets, this one includes a condensed rulebook, a short adventure, and—most importantly for me—custom dice themed to the game. And, of course, a map and character sheets, just as described in the product details.

Although the TftL setting takes place in 1980s Sweden, it's quite easy to adapt to any location, which I think is a better approach to preserve the original concept. The game's huge appeal lies in its nostalgia. Players can reminisce about the 80s and their own childhoods; the mechanics and plot rely heavily on roleplaying, communication, and interaction between the kids and their surroundings—parents, teachers, and so on. You play as children in an 80s world that's just a little bit different. The world is more or less as it was in the real 80s, but science and technological progress are far more advanced: robots operate in cities, massive magnetronic ships float among the clouds, and abandoned portals to the past can be found in the woods, occasionally letting something like a dinosaur slip into our world.

Mechanically, it's worth noting that players cannot die. They are just kids, so they can only lose the will to continue investigating. The game uses only d6 dice; you roll as many as you have points in your skill and look for sixes. For the vast majority of cases, a single six is enough, but sometimes the GM might ask for 2 or 3.

The only major part of the rules missing from this set is character creation; you'll need to buy the full rulebook for that. That's perfectly fine, though, as this box is intended as a starting point to try out the game and decide if you want to dive into the full version.

Ackoliv se dej TftL odehrava v 80. letech ve Svedsku, docela snadno se da prenest kamkoliv, a myslim si, ze je to i lepsi napad pro zachovani originalni myslenky. Obrovska atraktivita hry je totiz v nostalgii. Hraci si muzou zavzpominat na 80. leta a svoje detstvi, mechanika a dej predpoklada hodne roloveho hrani s komunikaci a interakci mezi detmi a jejich okolim, tzn. rodicemi, uciteli atd. Hraci totiz hrajou role deti ve svete 80. let, ktere jsou tak trosku jine. Svet je vicemene takovy, jaky byl za opravdovych 80. let, ale veda a vedecky progres jsou dost posunute dopredu, ve mestech fungujou roboti, mezi mraky plavou obrovske magnetronicke lode a v lesech jsou k nalezeni opustene portaly do minulych casu, ze kterych se do naseho sveta obcas dostane treba nejaky dinosaurus.

Mechanicky by se melo zminit to, ze hraci nemuzou zemrit. Jsou jen deti a muzou akorat stratit vuli k pokracovani v investigaci toho, co delali. Z kostky se pouzivaji jen d6, a to tim zpusobem, ze se haze tolik d6, kolik ma hrac bodu ve sve dovednosti, a pak se mezi hozenymi kostkami hledaji sestky. Pro drtivou vetsinu pripadu by mela stacit jen jedna sestka, ale nekdy muze PJ pozadat o 2 nebo 3 sestky.

Jedina velka cast pravidel, ktera chybi v tomto setu je popis vytvoreni noveho hrace, pro tyto ucely je potreba zakoupit plnou verzi pravidel. To je ale v poradku, protoze tato krabice je myslena jen jako takovy startovni bod, se kterym si hru muzete vyzkouset a rict si, jestli se chcete pustit do cele verze,
