The one-handed sword was a favorite weapon of medieval knights for close-quarters combat. It served for both slashing and thrusting. Until the mid-14th century, it typically featured a wider blade with sharper edges, designed primarily as a cutting weapon capable of piercing light chainmail. With the advent of plate armor, however, narrower and pointier blades evolved, specifically designed for thrusting. One-handed swords were also used on horseback, for instance, when a rider's polearm was broken or lost in battle.
