Slay the Spire: The return of the genre king and a new era of Spire-climbing
The king of the genre is back! Slay the Spire 2 is breaking records on Steam. What does the new heroine Necrobinder bring, and why has the mysterious Spire consumed the world once again?
What do you find in the article?
Every once in a while, a video game arrives that defines an entire genre. Years ago, Slay the Spire did exactly that. Everything takes place in a mysterious, ever-changing Spire, which you enter as a brave hero. It is a place filled with bizarre monsters, ancient relics, and fateful decisions. The principle is deceptively simple: climb floor by floor, build your card decks, and try to survive. But in the world of the Spire, death is just the beginning of a new lesson. Every failed attempt gives you new knowledge to use in your next run.
A phenomenon that changed the rules
The first Slay the Spire became an absolute phenomenon. Originally an unassuming indie project from Mega Crit studio, it practically created the modern roguelike deckbuilder genre on its own. Millions of players fell in love with combining cards and finding the strongest synergies. The game captured your heart with its depth, balance, and infinite replayability.
Its success was so massive that the Spire even received its own board game adaptation. The tabletop version Slay the Spire was a huge hit on Kickstarter and successfully translated the digital mechanics to the table, proving that this game design works in any form.
Slay the Spire 2: New blood in the foundations of the Spire
After years of waiting, the gates of the Spire have reopened in early access for the second installment. Slay the Spire 2 is not just a simple expansion, but an evolution. The game has moved to the new Godot engine, allowing developers to implement modern visuals, smoother animations, and new technical possibilities. The progress compared to the first game is significant, and it looks beautiful.
What is new? Besides familiar faces like the Ironclad or the Silent, the game introduces a brand new character – the Necrobinder. This heroine wields the powers of death, summons an animated hand to help her, and brings entirely new strategic possibilities that were not present in the first game. The game also tweaks your movement on the map, adds new types of events, and improves the relic system, making it even more varied and unpredictable.
Historic success on Steam
Expectations were huge, but the reality exceeded them. Slay the Spire 2 has literally taken Steam by storm. According to current statistics and reports from servers like Zing.cz or Games.cz, the game achieved an incredible feat: the number of concurrent players exceeded 500,000. That is a number most AAA titles can only dream of.
The game immediately shot to the top of the sales and popularity charts, showing that even in the face of massive competition from new deckbuilders, Mega Crit studio is still a step ahead. Early access reviews, such as those from IGN, agree that even though the game is still in development, it already feels incredibly polished and addictive. Slay the Spire 2 is not just a sequel; it is a confirmation of the dominance of a genre king that has returned to reclaim its crown.
The game is fully functional, and honestly, if it were released as a full version right now, you certainly wouldn't complain. To sum it up in my own words, it is not a revolution, but an evolution where they took the original concept and improved most aspects of the first game while maintaining its simplicity. I don't see a single reason to play the first one right now, and if you have no experience with it, don't be afraid to jump straight into the second one.
Slay the Spire 2 was released in early access on Steam on March 5, 2026. The full version release is currently estimated for 2027, depending on the length of development during early access.
