Multiverse News #2

News from the world of movies and games: the new Witcher, Ghost of Yōtei, digital Twilight Imperium, and upcoming Hideo Kojima projects.

Multiverse News #2

The world of movies and games has been buzzing lately. Netflix has revealed the new Geralt, Playstation is teasing the bloody beauty of Ghost of Yōtei, the legendary Twilight Imperium is heading to monitors in digital form, and Hideo Kojima is returning not just with Death Stranding, but also with a new horror game, OD. We have plenty to look forward to!

First look at the new Witcher

The fourth season of The Witcher series premieres on Netflix on October 30th. The lead actor swap sparked quite a stir, and now we can finally see how Liam Hemsworth, the younger brother of Marvel's Thor, has taken on the role of Geralt. I'm not sure if this will stop the series' declining popularity. The teaser looks a bit odd at first glance. Liam is trying his best, though, and if it turns out to be a flop, it won't be his fault.

Liam Hemsworth doesn't have as stellar a career behind him as his older brother Chris. Whether The Witcher will help him with that is uncertain. What is certain, however, is that the show's viewership continues to drop. It's clear that the American creators simply didn't understand the gritty Slavic soul of the source material, and the fans are letting them know it.

The bloody beauty of Japan in Ghost of Yōtei

Ghost of Yōtei, the sequel to the stunning Ghost of Tsushima, is approaching. The game arrives on Playstation 5 in early October. If you're looking forward to it, check out the new trailer showcasing not just the beautiful environment, but especially the often very bloody combat with opponents using a variety of weapons.

Twilight Imperium goes digital

The legendary board game we love, Twilight Imperium, is getting a digital version! The game is heading to Steam (Win) and is being developed by Red Square Games. It promises 17 factions, 4th edition rules, an interactive tutorial, and both single and multiplayer modes. The highly-rated Dune: Imperium was released in a similar fashion last year. You can already add it to your wishlist on Steam.

Twilight Imperium is definitely not a game for everyone. It's a 5+ hour experience that requires a lot of space. For us working folks with families, it's a rare treat to play it once or twice a year. But it's absolutely worth it. Thanks to its system, players don't get bored even when it's not their turn. It's full of intrigue, shaky alliances, diplomacy, and combat. In the end, you won't even realize you've spent practically the whole day playing.

An animated return to the world of Death Stranding

This year's second installment of the game Death Stranding: On the Beach by Japanese video game wizard Hideo Kojima was an experience I won't soon forget. Hideo simply thinks about games differently than everyone else. He can build a sophisticated world around a relatively simple idea, full of events that get deep under your skin. And I would describe the game's ending in a few simple words: mind-blowing, WTF, what the hell was that, and it was amazing! A third part doesn't seem to be in the works, but we can still revisit the world affected by the Death Stranding in an upcoming film.

A live-action film is in the works, about which nothing is known yet, but a trailer for another film—an animated one—is already out.

Death Stranding: Mosquito (working title) will take place in the game's world but will have nothing to do with the original story. Which is definitely fine, because the game's world has much more to offer than what we've seen so far. Hideo Kojima has taken on the role of producer, and as is his custom, we learn practically nothing from the teaser. But that just makes it all the more surprising!

New teaser trailer for the horror game OD

And Hideo Kojima once more! Besides Death Stranding, his team has been working on the horror game OD for some time. Back in 2012, it was announced that Hideo, along with director Guillermo del Toro and actor Norman Reedus, was working for Konami on a new installment of the Silent Hill horror series.

The announcement was made in an unconventional way via the game demo P.T., which became a legend in its own right. It was a huge deal that I, for one, couldn't wait for. But due to a dispute with Konami, the game was eventually canceled. How I hated Konami back then! However, from the ruins of that planned collaboration, the game Death Stranding was born. Hideo didn't want to give up on horror, though. As he said himself, he wanted to test the boundaries of fear in video games. And about two years ago, the game OD was announced. We can finally take a look at a tiny teaser.

You won't be much wiser after watching it. Kojima is a master of slow-dripping information. But fear and an unsettling feeling scream from the footage. Hideo clearly didn't want to throw away everything he did for Silent Hill. For me, that means only one thing: my excitement level is at its maximum!
